A beautiful, bittersweet story of science and camaraderie, a quest for understanding, and the pointless obstacle course scientists now navigate.

Great piece framing the hazard landscape in this monster El Niño, a bit about some proactive governmental planning to stave off the worst of the harms, an urgent call to action for just-in-time interventions. Helps imagine a world in which the hard work of science yields sensible societal response.

Could we compile a thread of examples of electeds who have worked hard and done something good since 2024? I want to *see* the good stuff, because the outrage machine churns out new provocative new evils every 5 minutes to keep us from doing so. Let's turn the tables. I'll go first:

🌊 I searched the long version of NSF’s letter on “a New Golden Age of Science.“ There is no mention of any of the following words: planet, Earth, ocean, atmosphere, climate, weather, or the stem “geo.”

Rhode Island voters thinking about the 9/9 primaries, I met an amazing candidate for Lieutenant Governor: Sue Anderbois. She has a super impressive set of experiences, skills, and a huge vision. She’s written a very smart 20-page plan to bring affordable, clean energy to the state and it’s so good!

#energysky what’s the going rate in your region to get your rooftop array removed during roof repair and put pack after? Has anyone gotten Tesla to honor the $500 for 1-time remove/replace in the contract? We need a new roof, and our 10-year-old, 3.9kW, 14 panels need a friend.

🌊 @socatco2.bsky.social guides humanity by accounting for the molecules that turn the dial on our planet's temperature. The # of measurements informing the Atlas peaked in 2016. Last year, it declined to ~2005 levels. Huge swaths of the ocean haven't seen a single surface CO2 observation in 5 years.

Next time someone asks you about energy and land use, maybe remind them that the ~35 million acres that currently grow corn for ethanol in the US could produce ~15 PWh per year of electricity from solar photovoltaics. That's ~3.5 times more than *total annual generation from all US power plants*.
