An underrated way to secure leverage over many in the billionaire class would genuinely just be to search their yachts and private jets for illegal drugs and firearms.

1. London Underground station flooding has reportedly been reduced by around 90% thanks to a group of engineers: beavers. After conservationists reintroduced a family of beavers into a nearby city park, the animals built dams and restored wetlands that now absorb and slow floodwater naturally.

Here's an example of a linguistic fact that I think should be straightforward and obvious when pointed out, but which a lot of people seem surprisingly resistant to: Colloquial Latin never died. In fact it's spoken extremely widely across the world. 🧵

Has my generation's women's movement failed? In some ways yes for stupid reasons. Ruth Bader Ginsburg should have given up her Supreme Court seat under Obama. What's the name for that kind of failure? Perhaps: a lack of hard-nosed realism. A lack of respect for the real boundaries. 87 is 87.

THREAD: Cherise Doyley was in her 12th hour of contractions at the hospital when a tablet was brought to her bedside. On the screen was a Zoom call with a judge and several lawyers and doctors. She was in court, a nurse told her. The reason? For failing to agree to a C-section.

So it’s a race: how quickly can a person’s family realize they were snatched and find a lawyer, and how quickly can that lawyer get a habeas petition of file? And is that faster than ICE can load the detainee on a plane to Texas? It’s exhausting and terrifying. It can be life and death. 18/

The fact that the cases are meritless actually makes them MORE effective for intimidation. Prosecuting actual criminals sends no broader message. They’re saying: “Piss us off and we’ll find some bullshit reason to tie you up in court whether or not we have any chance of making it stick.”

Because, now, they aren't just stuck with the volatility caused by non-deterministic automation but also large-scale dysfunction: stress, burnout, overloaded departments, and product defects would still continue even if they excised the source of volatility and stopped using "AI" 15/

Non-deterministic automation with high variability can't be left unattended, so they don't increase capacity directly: you still need the worker. Unless the output doesn't matter, but in that case it's wasted effort in its entirety and you'd get more gains from finding ways to avoid it completely 9/

NEW: Data released by ICE shows that virtually the entire growth of detention in the last few months has been among people with no criminal record at all - no prior convictions (no matter how minor) and no pending criminal charges.
Chart showing "Detention Population, Among Those Arrested in the interior, by Criminal Record, May 2019 through January 27, 2026. There are three lines on the graph: prior conviction, pending criminal charges, and no criminal record. from 2019 through January 2025, "prior conviction" is by far the highest, followed by pending charges much lower down and "no criminal record" the lowest. During the Biden admin, very few people arrested by ICE in the interior and detained had no criminal record. Beginning in January 2025, all three lines jump, but the highest spike is among those with no criminal records. By September, that has become the single largest. Since that point, there are now thousands more people in detention with no criminal record than people with prior convictions.
