I would suggest a differently coloured foliage as I always panic when I can't find her. Since she laid ootheca she is the master of disappearing from the free range plants to the ends unknown. But today in the flower right next to her tree, on the underside. #mantis Matylda
The underside of a yellow blossomed chrysanthemum. There sits Matylda, this time hiding well, not in plain sight. I had to use my flashlight while crawling under the table and then I noticed her shape. A red basking light shines from above onto the sheer curtains. It is already a dark evening.

Matylda's favourite spot is on my cap. She can spend hours up there, being carried around. And a pose for the Press. Sadly, she lost some peripherals.

It's interesting, we are trying to avoid any injury or discomfort to the animal, who, of course, sabotages all the effort. by finding exactly one flaw in the design. I rescued Matylda from between the ceiling layers and secured it once more. I literally sewed the plastic sheet onto the mesh.

After deep analysis and following the clues throughout the garden I came to the conclusion that the visitor might be another hedgehog. And what are you up to at four in the morning?
A nighttime photo of an area by the pond. There are rocks in the right part, that mark the pond polygon. One of the middle rocks is moved away. There are also small white pebbles with a circle and a letter H in the middle for the heliport for birds. Scarce little green plants grow all over the entrance.A green kidney bean pod laying between the rocks by the pond has been chewed on. From a photo one cannot tell that the grass has been stepped on when tunneling through the foliage.

Matylda's enclosure was edited, I finally assembled the ceiling lodge for her. But my green friend prefers free range habitat. I understand, but sometimes it is necessary to have her safely in the terrarium. #invertebrates #mantis
Matylda's terrarium's measurements go like this: the base is 45 centimetres wide and deep and the whole habitat reaches 60 centimetres. With a waterproofed base it can be turned into a paludarium for example.

A top-down view with the door open and light coming from the left side. The contents are the same. Coco fiber for bedding, big driftwood set behind the planter to the left, leaning on real bark background, on the right is a small Y shaped cork branch. The terracotta pot in the middle holds a tall coleus plant that reaches the ceiling area with thinner and lighter twigs and branches intertwined with an artificial vine. Here is the mantis looking down from a jade plant with thick leaves. View us from the bottom below the mantis and up to her face. The red heating lamp is on and shines from behind.A green mantis strolls over the light gray fluffy sleeve towards me.A view from below the free range shrubbery shows two tall and branchy plants with a climbing vine in the small one. I was able to remove those plastic twines, that have been left in the woodland by the farmers and their hay baler. I had no tools and a bunch is still entwined out there, despite my efforts, that took a lot of time til pitch black dark.
An oversized ball of dirty plastic twines in a black trash bag. It's a big bag, as big as the yellow trash bin. Luckily my fellow explorer had this bag in the backpack. Twines, next to the other trash, are super dangerous to wildlife.

I may have ordered a bigger habitat for a single green lady. The forest for the free range I set up on the table showed me, that a mantis wants to be in a big habitat. Also she sipped water from my hand, really thirsty after the dinner. She does have water, moisture and droplets in the box.

The impact of free ranging domestic cats on wildlife is horrible. These predators are not native. They wipe out whole colonies of birds, that can't fend for themselves. Bring illnesses to humans too (thanks, really). And yet.. I don't understand why love for a (one) species often stops right there.

She pressed herself to the nearest corner of the enclosure in wanting to go out. I got a few brilliant ideas. So, I collected branches, pebbles and made a climbing tree, next to the living plants. A lot of climbing happened, including peekaboos, sunbaths, dozing off or watching a hooman to doze off.

I tried to be careful, so here is a young sparrow awake and ready to bolt away. He is just a ball of fluff. The weather is dark and windy. ?? Question: #invertebrates #mantis #question I have a special visitor, a praying mantis. Is it ok to release her in an old orchard? A neighbour disturbed her habitat with pruning. It is already 5 pm, windy with rain. I ask for the animal. I don't care about me getting wet. 🧐

A few bad photos of my camera display and a picture from this tablet, also blurry. But I have a new visitor to the feeder specifically. Starlings tend to flock on the trees or ground, eating fruits or bugs. This is juvenile starling and at times was accompanied by sparrows, a dove, chickadees.. 🪶💕
A juvenile starling is standing behind the juvenile sparrow. Both are facing the left and starling's bill is covered in suet. As a juvenile he still has a light brown colour on his head like sparrows, but the body is already black with light spots at the feather tips. Blurred greenery in the background.A tablet picture shows juvenile starling standing on a shelf I secured to the balcony railing, facing the camera but with his head turned to the right. A makeshift perch slightly below and to the left accommodates a tiny terracotta planter with a suet ball in it. It looks like an ice cream in a biscuit cone. A cylindrical plastic feeder hangs from the perch and is empty. It has a lime green roof, sheer plastic silo and dark gray saucer. A hollow tube runs through it as a part of design so the feeder can be mounted on a pole. Green trees are in the background.A close up of the starling, that is facing the viewer, a tiny bit turned to the left and head turned also to the left and enough to help the bird see me. I was, of course, encouraging the little feathered friend, that has a long and pointy bill, to eat and not be afraid of the terracotta pot. The bird was very cautious, sneaking around it and jumping away the moment he hit the ball.

I Went for a short walk and harvested some scattered wheat, that still grows around the field and a lot of poppy seed heads. Then I split the bouquet and installed it on birdy and bug island. Also.. mushrooms.
A hand in a greenish camouflaged long sleeve holds a thick bouquet of foraged wheat and tiny poppy heads.vYhe sun is shining from the left. Bird and bug island is in the background.Top view of the bug island showing all the tree trunks chunks, sticks and a few plants. On the left stands makeshift lookout tower, I mean, perch for birds made of our shrub branches, the wood is hard and most resilient. Big rocks are set throughout the island. A base of an old cherry tree is in the background to the right, narrower tree trunk on the left in the background. I created islands and meandering paths almost everywhere. Found rocks create swirls and edging. A big mushroom with a smaller one by its foot emerged from below the cut dry grass by the road, ground level view. On a sunny day in an already newly grown grass. A circular road sign and the hill are in the background.

A learning curve for chaotic sparrows trying to snatch some all-year-round-type suet, while pushing and snapping had to change into staying in the line, mostly, hover like a hummingbird, strengthen legs, so they can hold onto the feeder and gain some good balance when it comes to dangly feeders. 🪶
