Tonight's NUJ branch meeting is special for two reasons. Firstly it's our "welcome meeting" for journalism students. The second is that we are at a show highlighting @tashuk.bsky.social 40+ years documenting policing and protests. boningtongallery.co.uk/event/alan-l... @nujofficial.bsky.social

With two days of strike action under our belts, we now begin over two months of continuous in response to our university's gross financial negligence. Shout out to Notts Solidarity Group for the slides! And @tregenza.bsky.social for the original photos.
67 days of industrial action against course closures and job lossesWhy are staff striking?

The University of Nottingham identified a £30 million deficit after wasting £80 million pounds on consultants and vanity projects such as the
‘Castle Meadow’ Campus, which is now unsellable.

Over 3900 staff received notice of risk of redundancy, with 258 administrative
/ professional services roles to be made redundant.

UCU argues that there is now no financial justification for compulsory redundancies.

Student recruitment has been strong, voluntary redundancy has increased, staff have submitted extensive alternative proposals capable of delivering further savings and the university itself is saying it now has a surplus.

Management have refused to rule out further compulsary redundancies and are intent on making students and staff pay for their mistakes by closing courses vital for the East Midlands. When are staff striking?

Staff at the University of Nottingham Started striking on 30th September and 1st October, as the University’s governing Council met to finalize restructuring plans.

The two-day strike is now followed by sustained strike Action from 5th October TO 11th December.

Support the UCU: email the vice chancellor to tell her what you think of her plans. and Please consider making a donation if you are able. The Local Branch Hardship Fund is maintained to help strikers who will suffer significant hardship from loss of pay due to striking. No More Course Cuts

Burnham scraps Starmer-era plans to curb jury trials. A victory for common sense. The Bill would have been defeated in the Lords. Due to Tory cuts, there is a backlog of over 81,000 Crown Court cases in England & Wales. Govt must invest in public services.

If anyone is struggling to understand how our media and politicians are still talking about an RAF Fairford "bomb plot" when there were no bombs found, then the Forest Gate raid in 2006 is a useful comparison en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forest_...
Photo taken by Netpol's campaigns coordinator in 2006 of the end of Lansdown Rd in Forest Gate, closed by police after a "bomb plot" terrorism raid led to the sealing off of the area for a week. One man was shot but fortunately survived – there was no bomb factory, yet the Kahar family were smeared by the media for weeks

"You were right" I hope all those Starmer loyalists and MPs feeding from the Israeli trough are choking right now. This will go a long way to shoring up Labour's traditional base, assuming action and words align. It also sets the stage for Burnham to show real, radical leadership in his speech.

Two tier policing. Victoria Thomas Bowen, who chucked a milkshake at Farage, was given a 13-week jail sentence, suspended for 12 months; had to pay him £150 compensation; had to complete 120 hours of unpaid work and pay £450 in court costs. It was nowhere near the level of violence of this assault.

The PSPO introduced by Nottingham's Labour council is designed to restrict protest and the public's right to use public spaces. Intimation and practically everything else in it are already covered by existing laws. But a PSPO allows the council to use poorly trained rentacops to restrict freedoms.
