As unprofessional as it may be, I suspect I will be shouting "we have been saying this for years" a lot today. Harsher immigration policies don't just ruin individual lives, they damage the economy, reduce jobs, and generally harm the whole country.

New book alert: Rulebreakers & Ghost Runners by @runyoung50.bsky.social , out now with @bloomsburybooksuk.bsky.social. Holmes explores the long history of women who 'broke the rules, broke records and broke barriers' when the athletics establishment barred them from distance events.
The front cover of a book. The book's title, in white block capitals, is 'Rulebreakers & Ghost Runners', with the subtitle in black, 'The British women who asserted their right to run'. The author's name, Katie Holmes, and the publisher, Bloomsbury, appear at the bottom. The cover image is a monochrome photograph of five white women in late 1960s/early 1970s clothing running a race towards the camera. The background of the cover is dark pink for the top half, and white for the bottom half.

"The whole situation amounts to blackmail." The President of the Jordanian Football Association accuses Infantino of blackmail, says they have not been paid prize money for the Arab Cup and were subjected to grossly unfair conditions at the World Cup in US.
There is no shortage of issues regarding FIFA. Let me start by clarifying what some of these are from an FA perspective, in particular that of Jordan going into a World Cup for the first time.
We are a small country with a minimal budget for our FA and had to deal with enormous hurdles. First, getting our fans into the USA: not all were granted VISAS, even though they had tickets -which we also know were sold at exorbitant prices. Secondly, we are being taxed by the US govt through FIFA for our participation. Money that should go to players and staff. This was not the case for those who played and set up camp in Canada and Mexico. But we happened to be in the USA so now we face these huge costs in taxes for having participated.
Thirdly we have been waiting for reward money for our players since December for the Arab cup in Qatar, which is a FIFA event. The money our team should receive for having reached the final has not been delivered yet, while at the same time FIFA brags about how many billions they have in reserve.
It is clear the problem really is with leadership. For months, FIFA has been refusing to help us on any of these or other matters- until it was verbally communicated to me during the World Cup that if I endorsed Infantino it would go a long way to helping our FA out.
We pride ourselves in Jordan in upholding ethical values. We did not endorse him before and certainly will not now. But the whole situation amounts to blackmail and we refuse to give in to that.

For non-academic people, this how much UK universities pay publishers to publish their researchers’ articles. The publishers don't pay the researchers, and don't pay the peer reviewers. They also frequently cock up your paper at the typesetting stage. Academic publishing is the worst grift.

The point isn't to produce essays, it's to teach students how to think for fuck's sake. The minute you automate that, it's over. You might as well close the course. Which they're also doing. This is an attack on learning, and everyone is just shrugging.
