Checks out. This very good boy is reasonably smart and earnestly assumes the best about people (except people wearing raincoats, but nobody is entirely without bias.)

This account is the only thing making Biblical level downpours and the resulting plague of mosquitos kind of darkly fun. At this point, might as well cheer for cracking Edmonton's monthly precipitation record. 25 hours left in June - let's go! ⛈️ ⛈️ 🦟🦟

Canada has unveiled its long-awaited national AI strategy, but experts say key questions around regulation, privacy, and accountability remain unanswered. Can Ottawa translate its AI ambitions into public confidence? thewalrus.ca/canada-ai-plan
On the left: a photograph of Mark Carney and Evan Solomon through glass, blurred slightly. On the right: text that reads “Canada finally has a national AI strategy. Experts hate it. We asked researchers, entrepreneurs, and policy analysts to read the plan so you don’t have to. They found plenty to worry about.”

"The funniest possible outcome of the AI mandate era is about to be HR departments discovering that 'sincerely held religious belief' under Title VII has a much lower bar than they assumed, and Pope Leo handed every Catholic employee a written excuse" www.businessinsider.com/worker-got-r...

She won an exemption from using AI at her tech job. The Pope's remarks could fuel similar appeals.
Legal experts say employers must take AI-related religious objections seriously, as a 2023 ruling raised the bar for denying such accommodations.

Happy Equinox! The air smells like David Francey's line "when winter finally breaks its bones". My garden plants are sprouting hopefully in the kitchen, and willows along the river are getting fluffy.
Fluffy willows (at least I think they are willows) along the bank of the Sturgeon River herald the coming of spring.

-laughs nervously in Ukrainian- So er, I don't want to be alarmist my Canadian friends but it's not a GREAT sign when the superpower next door starts talking about how the people of a resource rich region of yours yearn for the freedom to join them and suggesting referendums...

I strongly recommend connecting with the committed childcare advocates at www.10aday.ca before deciding that the market alone should rule childcare in BC and that the City of Vancouver is the main barrier. Conditional zoning benefits include ensuring safe, functional environments for kids to learn.

For anyone feeling back to school/end of summer/start of everything Sunday Scaries (though it's Monday), here is a picture of my cousin's dog jumping into the local outdoor pool at today's end-of-season dogs only day.
A big red dog is joyfully leaping into an outdoor swimming pool, with ears and tail aloft.

I generally say no too, but realized with despair that shops can also track your debit card. At least when I declined to log in to my GAP account for an in-store purchase, the cashier said brightly "Oh no worries, you'll get the points anyways, because the account is linked to your debit card!"

It's -25, so perfect time to plan camping for the summer. What have Alberta campgrounds got against potable water? Our fondest hope is a bit of shade and not to get beaver fever.

Never thought of it this way, but of course free trade changed what produce is available in Canada. We had oranges and grapefruit when I was a kid, but not avocados either. I recall encountering my first mango, in university, and trying to pop it off the pit like a big peach.

In the absence of family traditions for Imbolc / Bridgid's day / halfway between midwinter and the spring equinox, we did some spring cleaning. Spring feels far away in today's -20 snow, but brighter days, at least, are coming.
