Anyone who expects that these documents will solve the mystery of The Morgan Affair will be disappointed. But they help fill in some gaps in the documentary record that is available online. So hopefully future Morgan Affair researchers will have an easier time accessing them than I did.

The fine people at the New York State Archives scanned their fragile copy of The Morgan Investigator for me. But unfortunately, some words in this printing are obscured by small folds in the paper, which couldn't be smoothed out without damage risk. But it is mostly readable.

However, the credibility of Lewis' "The Morgan Affair" isn't perfect. The text isn't annotated, requiring researchers to find his sources for themselves. Secondly, it contains factual errors and a willingness to repeat Masonic propaganda. Historian William Preston Vaughn made this note in 1983.
The best narrative account of the Morgan affair, although it contains some factual errors and a pro-Masonic bias, is Clarence 0. Lewis, ''The Morgan Affair," manuscript,
in the possession of the Lockport Public Library, Lockport, New York. Lewis, a former Niagara County (New York) historian, based his unannotated resume on sixty years of research.

The kidnapping and presumed murder of William Morgan was a major fixation of American politics for about six decades after 1826. It was the catalyst of the first third party in American history: the Anti-Masonic Party. At their peak of power in 1833 they controlled about 10% of the House.

The plot to abduct Morgan involved at least 69 freemasons, 7 relays of horses, 3 horse carriages, and 5 stagecoach drivers. And that doesn’t even include the manpower involved in the failed plot to abduct Morgan’s publisher David C. Miller. Here’s a map of Morgan’s abduction route from a 1932 book.

Morgan, a 50-something married man and two very young children, found himself in this situation because his in-progress manuscript on the York Rite degrees was humiliating to his former Masonic brethren. He naively thought the book would make him wealthy. Or at least end his money troubles.
