This combined with the current policy on trans people just adds an additional level of insult. So glad I can get a passport that opens me up to harassment and abuse - and misrepresents my actual life - in a fancy fucking envelope.

One thing to bear in mind about a federal permitting bill is that its mistakes would be essentially permanent - Dems could only reverse mistakes with a filibuster-proof 60-vote supermajority in the Senate. Repubs, on the other hand, could use captured courts to shave off bits their donors dislike.

“It takes too long to build transmission lines” is a problem you can solve with permitting reform (although, a lot of this could be addressed with state capacity…). “Donald Trump is the president and wants to kill wind power by any means possible” is not really a permitting reform problem

Shay O’Reilly @shaygabriel.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
why the fuck are Dems rushing through a “permitting reform” bill that will almost certainly be less favorable than what they could get in six months? When they can also, say, impeach Trump and exercise their legislative power to stop him from fucking with wind projects?

I am really scrupulous about my social media hygiene and I think it has prevented it from being (too) harmful to me or my politics. but I think I am in at least the 1% of conscientious users, and a tech that requires this is bad.

i'd take it even a step further than you do: it's not that social media produces fascists, but that it produces antisocial behaviour broadly, where even good acts of protest can quickly devolve online into just another method for expressing antisocial impulses in a way that feels "safe" to do

something I'd add to this is that social media, by selecting for the most attention-grabbing content, simultaneously mass produces angry, paranoid, xenophobic morons (ie fascists) and undermines the foundation of public literacy itself

The most revealing part of the Heidenau stolpersteine ban is that while the local CDU gestures to a Jewish Bavarian leader’s position against stolpersteine, they wish not to remember the way Munich does but to hide the memorial away from public life, in a cemetery.

I know heatmap’s value proposition has become “what if climate journalism was also negative towards climate activists” but I don’t understand how this is not embarrassing. you got a professional liar to lie to you on stage and treated it like a big deal?
"I'm here because I love thoughtful dialogues on energy, climate change, and human lives, Energy Secretary Chris Wright told my colleague Robinson Meyer this afternoon. "That's been a passion my whole life, and nothing will change that."Then, of course, there was Wright.
The energy secretary - whom climate insiders have described to us as the biggest climate villain in the Trump administration after Trump himself - talked to Rob about as many fuels as they could cover. Wind: "There have been very spirited dialogues in the administration about this. I do believe a successful permitting reform thing changes the playing field for anything you want to build in this country, including wind." Nuclear: "Our thing is just to try to get it back on its feet and get out of the way." Natural gas:
"Gas in my lifetime is going to be the American energy superpower for sure, but you never want all your eggs in one basket."
Batteries: "I'm all in." And EVs:

Take, for instance, migration. It is in my opinion a disaster that it is becoming rarer and rarer for someone to just stand up and say that fundamentally they believe in sheltering the wretched of the Earth, that it is a duty we have to each other because of our common humanity.
