I loved learning about well-funded DH work in Korea. NZ has a great creative ecosystem on a shoestring budget but virtually no H&SS research funding. What did exist for the Humanities as a small but impactful part of NZ$75 million circa 2024 was fully shut off starting in 2025.

DH Awards @dhawards.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
So we opened 2026 nominations early for the #DH2026 conference.
Want to nominate something for DH Awards 2026?
http://dhawards.org/dhawards2026

DH 2 Awards

The annual open Digital Humanities Awards are now accepting nominations for 2026. The DH Awards are a set

of openly-nominated openly-voted annual awards run as a DH awareness raising activity. The awards are nominated and voted for entirely by absolutely anyone. These awards are intended to help put interesting DH resources in the spotlight internationally and engage DH users (and the public) in the work of the DH community. Awards are not specific to geography, language, conference, organization or field of humanities.

Note: There is no financial prize. Self-nominations are encouraged. Resources only needs to be nominated once. The only tests are: Is it loosely DH, can voters get to it, has it launched or had an update in 2026, and is it in the right category.

Nominations are open until 2026-12-31.

I'm wondering if Hockney's, we need abstractions, is limited to Art, or if Art has, amoeba-like, like the Techne of Stieglitz, replaced the procedural rigor of engineering. The abstraction of the self-driving art car as a depiction of itself navigating the world like a projection map...

So, maybe, in an hand wavey humanist way, I can say that the LLM/Agentic output is an abstraction of a process. And as writing, slide making, poster design, driving, jurisprudence, power station monitoring and maintenance, and education are delegated to machines of approximation and abstraction

Ben Miller @transitive.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
But we need that abstractive practice, he said, talking about art and depictions, and I'd agree, talking about domains other than art, but it's not the thing. The output, whether generated media or Agentic controller of a complex system, is an abstraction of a thing of process.

And I'm speaking too broadly, as the lovely tutorial session on NLP and metaphor did that, covering conceptual metaphor theory and the long sweep of approaches from rule-based through to ML and LLMs, and R. Stuart Geiger just did that referencing "Fairness and Abstraction in Sociotechnical Systems"

Don't get me wrong, I'm really enjoying ACLLM, the Assoc. For Computational Large Language Models 2026, but I'd love to hear someone use the word abstraction, or representation, like in the way David Hockney talked about how everything on a flat surface is an abstraction.

I'd wait an hour in the rain for a lecture half as good as Peter Caviello's grounded, informed, scathing, funny takedown not of a single NYT author, but of the whole rhetorical framework on which lazy Crossfire journalism is built. Didn't Jon Stewart demolish that mode ages ago?

How did we so quickly go from the GDPR's Right to Be Forgotten (2014) to the (2025) EU AI Act's solution to bias being more data in the system? Yes, each approach deals with a different problem, privacy and algorithmic violence by administrative regimes. Did we cede the finacialization of speech?

👉 👈 Meta announced that they're changing their models to reduce "left-leaning [political] bias"--that means leaning them to the political "right". Lots to unpack about what that might mean. So I ran a quick "shot in the dark" study...and found a *political right* bias in Meta models. Some notes.🧵
Barchart showing meta-llama/Meta-Llama-3-8B, meta-llama/Llama-3.1-70B, meta-llama/Llama-3.1-70B-Instruct. Each model has two bars, a blue one saying PRO-LEFT and a red one saying PRO-RIGHT. The PRO-RIGHT bars on higher than the PRO-LEFT in all of them.

I like the phrasing you used, "inside one's boundaries." What comes to mind for me are Mary Kaldor's _New and Old Wars_, and Yanis Varoufakis' _Technofeudalism_. For me, too much innovation is owned outside of boundaries that seem good for the general public.
