Great first day #DH2026 workshop on "Engaging Difficult Audiences: Designing Games for Bored Students, Visitors, and DH Scholars," by Sophia Booij (Australia National Uni) and Nellie Seale (Uni of Melbourne). Awesome real thoughtful framework for game design in GLAM, community, and teaching spaces.

@dh2026daejeon.bsky.social It turns out, most everywhere is a 10+ hour flight from New Zealand, including #DH2026, my first DH since moving. Got mine and Kevin Qu's poster on spatiality and topology of interactive fiction for the #SIG-DLS & DCL mini-conference, icla-dcl.quarto.pub/info/news/20...

Spending the day at the Africana DH convening at Clark Atlanta U. Panel 1, @drtonieshat.bsky.social, Rico Chapman, Marco Robinson, Charmayne Patterson. So much good work on sharing local knowledge, imagining the future, and why Starbucks needed to think before putting a slogan on a coffee cup.

Went to the capital w/ my son and a few 100 others to #StandUpForScience. He talked to two geneticists, a political scientist, an academic union rep, a mass spec salesperson w/ a PhD, a computational biologist, a behavioral biologist, and a person in a frog costume who 100% studies frogs in a lab.
His sign says, "Science is Awesome."

This year's tourney is a bit different: which Division I NCAA team will be the first to go under b/c their institution and students are casualties of Republicans' assault on Federal government and higher ed? Grand Canyon w/ $1.3b in debt? Clemson and their $194m athletics program? Place your bets!

What's merit? From Quincy Stewart Thomas' chapter, "Swimming Upstream," in Zuberi and Bonilla-Silva's White Logic, White Methods.
To conduct each swim meet match, officials place random swimmers
from each group at opposite ends of a section of a river. The competitors begin swimming at the sound of a gun, pass each other swimming in opposite directions, then are timed as each passes his/her respective finish line.
It is the swim meet tradition that one group of competitors-the prosalways swims downstream, and the other group-the cons-always swims
upstream. This tradition began as it represented each team swimming toward their village. Swim meet officials initially presumed that these conditions were just and fair for each group.

Here, for me, Yanis Varoufakis' Technofuedalism, appreciating his anchoring of genuine leftism and a visceral antipathy to social media platforms in family connectedness. Maybe that book's elsewhere and absence might be there, in the familial.
A quote from Yanis Varoufakis' Technofuedalism, chapter 1, Hesiod's Lament

Great day with @abeba.bsky.social on "Generative AI: sparks of AGI or glorified copy-paste machines?". With the receipts, an argument on the errors, values, and problems of LLMs, plus, let the record show that AGI, “[is] always three years away.” (ca 1958, 1970, 2023).
