Yep. And the most recent example of the UK going against it even in a limited way happened on the back of Greens being radical and popular - straight talking, confident, relatable, united, focused on actions rather postures. I'd like them to get back to that.

Who are the people? Ed Miliband? Andy Burnham? I'm as angry as you about all that - I left as soon as KS became leader - but I don't get how that leads you to a position where the Green Party should not be trying to pressure the Labour Party to do anything through being radical and popular.

But did America want it? I don't defend it as a sufficient response to the (long) genocide. But you're the one saying it's impossible for Britain to do anything that America doesn't want. I view that as self-defeating.

Did Britain do what America wants when Ed Miliband called the occupation illegal, called settlers terrorists and announced (insufficient) sanctions?

I agree - Corbyn was an electoral threat until he got properly trounced by a combination of Brexit and an anti-semitism scandal - then he really wasn't. I agree Greens have lost momentum - I'd imagine that they'd want to do something about that in the days before their leader's by-election.

I don't know what your point is.

Tom Kemp @tomkemp.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
There's never been a left party in my life time that was as electorally threatening as the Greens were and could be. They were 21% in Spring and now 11%. Of course, not all down to them - victims of their own success etc. - but Hannah Spencer did not win through abstract statements of principles.

I meant specifically Labour compromising on cooperation in advance of a coming election - not compromise on principles/beliefs. Of course, Labour are the more powerful entity (not least because they lead in the polls) and I'd like the GP to doing stuff to increase their power.

The point wasn't that they would be friends. The point was that they would be forced into compromised by Green popularity and values.

Personally, I've been uncomfortable with the GPEW's one member one vote system for all the time I've been a green member. Aside from the issues with the motion, it appears to me to absolve local parties of meaningful politics, and render members more like volunteers rather political actors.

For me Zotero is just great at storing and reading pdfs and then v helpful when writing for citations and bibliographies. Obsidian is an optional way of storing notes for recall. Then this plugin helps me do that without the hassle of switching.

I'm creating this Zotero extension to allow you to create/write/sync obsidian literature notes within Zotero. If you'd like to test it out, I'm looking for feedback about whether it would fit into other's workflows, like it does mine. github.com/Acatechnic/o...

Immigrants & asylum seekers are not our enemies. They are not responsible for the austerity, privatisation, erosion of civic life, thinning of democracy and concentration of power we suffer. But they're being punished for these things. Punished at the behest of the very people who *are* responsible.

If a newspaper (okay, I only read the @theguardian.com) publishes an article solely based upon a report published by another organisation, is there a reason they don't systematically link to that report? Like surely this would help everyone involved?

into something so demoralised and vacuous feels like a repeat. How can we overcome these managerial logics that claim to deliver better services by making institutions so hostile and undermining to those who work to make them meaningful?

My mum had the experience of working for the NHS (as a speech and language therapist) then the service being privatised and the values of the organisation falling away into a laminated marketing pitch. Universities have always been compromised but watching them go through this convulsion

I wish it were true that "no one is above the law". But while the City of London acts as laundromat for the world's dirty money, as almost all fraud and waste crime go unprosecuted, as no one has gone to jail for the financial crash or the poisoning of our rivers, this is manifestly untrue.

Wouldn’t this be a version of mission creep. Proscription is for orgs so serious that even expressing support needs stopping. But now it’s ‘needed’ to allow proscribing less serious groups in more limited ways. I think that it needs to argued for rather be a logical step b/c the gov got embarrassed.

I want some of these people who are suddenly questioning failures of the wider culture to have a public moment like where a hapless faithful, on entering the final throws of the Traitors, asks 'Why am I here!?' Of course this won't be Streeting. He's conducting some traitor on traitor action here.

That Starmer and his allies have rid the Labour Party of its diversity and then operate so catastrophically that all they have is saying ‘what’s the alternative’ is hardly a selling point for Starmerism.

UN urges UK and France to halt ‘one in one out’ asylum system
Letter expresses concerns agreement may involve ‘serious violations of international human rights law’ The UN has called on the UK and France to halt the controversial “one in one out” asylum system, warning that there may be “serious violations of international human rights law”. Nine experts, who include seven special rapporteurs, wrote a 20-page letter to Downing Street and Paris on 8 December 2025 outlining detailed concerns about potential breaches of human rights they have identified in the scheme. They gave the two governments 60 days to respond and on Friday published their letter. Continue reading...

Apparently these were the follow up questions... Their own story makes them look stupid and gullible but I guess they're just hoping that the challengers are so weak they will not be able to capitalise on anything and Keir can bang on about how 'process' was followed.

The Labour Party might be more successful in finding a successor to Starmer who is not tainted by association with Mandelson if only there hadn't been a deliberate effort, led by Mandelson and his mentees, to sideline or expell everyone who didn't fall in line with his faction.l
