Ofcom should step in and do something about all the Guardian articles which leave you guessing for several borderline-illiterate paragraphs before confirming in passing that it is aimed at their Australian readers

A European settler who made his fortune in US industry is not from the West? (the last post isn't important, I just included it so you know you don't have to reply telling me the same thing).
Screenshot of an Elon Musk tweet calling someone a traitor to the west. Reply from an account I've anonymised "Weird how am Afrikaaner thinks he's from the West". Then a reply clarifying that Musk is not Afrikaaner.

Why are all the replies saying "I did know that actually!" and not "What are you talking about, that is not how money works, you are a charlatan who has no business selling financial advice"?

Harry Braverman: "[capitalist society dictates] that the ignorance of the great masses of the workers and the concentration of all engineering knowledge in a few specialists are desirable and, in fact, essential conditions rather than, as it would seem from a human point of view, an abomination."

Appreciate these two historic footballing nations putting on a very boring final to discourage Americans from taking too much interest in the sport after this.

One reason to be sad that England didn't make it to the World Cup final is that we don't get to see England fans booing the half time show, scandalising American broadcasters by calling Justin Bieber a cunt.

Accusations of bias actually have specific content that can be assessed. The left attack the BBC for justifying a genocide, the right attack it for having too many black people on screen. These aren't equivalent extremes that cancel each other out leaving only the enlightened centre.

Some former supporters of Keir Starmer are demonstrating maturity by doing threads explaining what positive expectations they had and how they were disappointed. I am demonstrating maturity by not quote-tweeting each one pointing out how patently naive they were. Together, we are growing.

I think that if you said to Pesto that the country and British democracy are in this parlous state *because of* people like Howe, Lawson, Brown and Osborne, rather than despite them, it simply would not compute for him. It’d sound like the way adults talk in a Charlie Brown cartoon.

Got a ticket to see The Odyssey next week and I can pretty much guarantee that the criticism I'm going to come away with will be that it is too tediously deferential to the source material and needed more irreverence, camp, and adaptation.

I used to get yelled at when I suggested that maybe the culture around English football might be reinforcing some imperial nationalist values so just for the record, please look at how the army's current recruitment campaign makes this explicit.
Images show the torsos of soldiers lined up with the legs of football players. Green graphic text reads: "You're already speaking our language. You belong here". Text box reads: "Scroll down to explore how your strengths on the pitch could translate to vital skills in the British Army".

This - from the pickle newsletter - is the endpoint of constantly playing to ‘reasonable concerns’.
For Samuel, it was clear which group the police regarded as the real threat. He said: "I believe the police view fascist actions as improper expressions of a sympathetic and correct politics, which are treated as annoyances to manage.
"However, far left and anti-fascist organisations are handled as enemies to be removed or quashed by the police, rather than facilitated."

I see Ann Widdecombe has died. When she was Home Secretary I showed her round Drake Hall womens’s prison. There was a pregnant woman on a bed in the early stages of Labour and she asked the prison officers why she wasn’t handcuffed to the bed. That’s the kind of woman she was.

"as time went on, the scale of the killing in Gaza became unbearable" so "it was right that we call for a ceasefire but by the time that we did it felt overdue". Just woolly-headed vacillation where some amount of civilian slaughter is acceptable but they were a bit slow to notice it was too much.

Mr Farage’s politics of working class resentment once had the momentum of a runaway freight train. Why was he so popular? Coppers are so immersed in their filthy day-to-day environment that they're genuinely surprised that civilians object when they encounter it.
Lorraine met former PC Phil Hunter when he made a welfare visit to her home in 2017. He was found guilty of gross misconduct at a disciplinary panel in August 2024.

The panel heard that, over a period of two years, he sent her inappropriate messages and tried to isolate her from friends and family as part of a "deliberate" and "predatory" plan to have a sexual relationship with her.

When Hunter retired in 2019, he was under investigation for a case involving another vulnerable woman he had met during a welfare visit and with whom he had started a sexual relationship.Although the Met's directorate of professional standards (DPS) were aware Hunter had already targeted another victim in similar circumstances, Lorraine's complaints were ignored.

"The first officers I spoke to said that police predators only exist in the mind of Daily Mail readers," she said. "That lots of officers meet partners in that way and that there was absolutely nothing to it."

It doesn’t really matter what we’re calling this year’s excuse for Fuck You, You Get Nothing - black hole, the national credit card, there is no magic money tree, it’s all the same thing. And that thing is: Fuck You, You Get Nothing.
was disappointed to see the FT reporting warnings of "a new black hole in the public finances" (September 9). A black hole is an astronomical body so dense that its gravity prevents anything from escaping. It is not the difference between a relatively arbitrary target and an uncertain forecast. As the BBC has acknowledged, journalists have a responsibility to take particular care when reporting on the public finances. Misleading and emotive metaphors should not be used
- at least without caveat or quotation marks
- in a serious newspaper such as the FT.
