New Horizons is now *three days away* from shutting off its two heliophysics instruments, simply because NASA has not provided the $2M in funding it had promised to the mission last year or this year. There is no science basis for shutting these off. Our earlier coverage:

One I missed earlier this month. Google mapped a fruit fly brain. You can now run a fruit fly brain in a simulator. I feel the queasiness that this post (interconnected.org/home/2026/09...) does. Esp given their intent to do the same for the human brain (sites.research.google/gr/neural-ma...)
In case you missed it:
Google Research and partners mapped the complete brain of fruit fly. (3 September).
It's a common bug and common in scientific research. The male fruit fly has 166,000 neurons across the brain and main nerve cord; the map is called the connectome.
Long story short, the connectome is now available for free download, you can get a simulator of the different types of neurons, it caught the imagination of the internet, over September there has been all kinds of wild nonsense (impressive

I just noticed that the system screen recording tool in macOS 27 finally (finally!) has a "Include System Audio" option!!
A computer screen shows a pop-up menu with options in a dark background. The menu lists "Microphone" options, including "None," "iPhone (Cabel) Microphone," and "MacBook Air Microphone." A highlighted option, "Include System Audio," is selected, with a blue background. A cursor is pointing at this option.

a final (probably) point on this: i think most non-streamers don't realise the platforms don't pay out instantly. so "demonetised pending review" is ENTIRELY possible to have as mechanism for this.

this isn't conjecture. This is the EXACT reason why one of the quickest ways to shut down a fash with a camera is to start shouting: "this video is brought to you by SquareSpace!" INSTANT demonitization. Because the streaming/social platforms already protect their advertisers more than the state.

if there was a mechanism in place to officially force Twitter, Youtube, Twitch, Tik-Tok etc to demonitize an account quickly, then so many of the major, and opportunistic, fash grifters would be fucked. especially coupled with powers to fine for a multiplier of past revenue earned.

will say it again: the most effective way to curb far right agitators like Lowe, "Tommo" et. al. would be to stop their ability to earn money for it from social media or live streaming. So much of it is grifting for revenue, not attention.

Relatedly: More could be done under existing legislation against platforms that host videos of criminal activity and individuals or organisations who profit from posting videos of crimes they & their members commit. This is also relevant to curbing stuff like dangerous driving video content.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

Wow: Giant new impact crater spotted on the Moon! An asteroid the size of an apartment building hit the lunar surface in early 2024 & created 220-meter (730-foot) wide McGetchin crater. It's "the largest contemporary impact crater found in the Solar System." 🧪🔭 science.nasa.gov/solar-system...
Officially named McGetchin after pioneering lunar scientist Tom McGetchin, the crater formed on the Moon’s eastern edge sometime between April 11 and May 22, 2024, after a comet or asteroid the size of a three- to six-story building hit the surface.

The crash left a crater, 728 feet wide, that spans the length of two football fields. And at 141 feet deep, the crater could fit three vertically stacked yellow school buses. Scientists estimate that an impact of this magnitude happens on the Moon about once in a century or even longer.
