You might also want to look into The Amazing Digital Circus, not sure how deep into college age the core demographic for the show goes but there's a good chance it's gonna be one of the main things your students will pull comparisons from. It was very much inspired by the short story

That's what adds an extra layer of weirdness for me. They could record and upload later, or run it outside of Zoom, it's just another layer of "can't be bothered to put any effort or care into this." There's still the issue of consent but they didn't even care enough to get that in the first place

It's mind boggling. It's not even a religious issue, Mormons have been on board with vaccines for a long time, when the covid vaccine came out the head of the church (who had been a surgeon) told everyone to get vaccinated! But politics comes first now I guess

If nobody wants to immigrate to a country, why would anybody want to be born in it? Talking birthrates is just pushing the problem onto people with no say in the matter

It was so windy today that my kid gave up trying to ride her new bike after maybe 60 seconds. So naturally there's someone on the neighborhood Facebook group offering a $100 reward to anyone that finds the drone their kid got today

Every once in a while it'll catch a typo, but every other suggestion is shit like this. It'll parse some logic wrong and tell you to fix it by doing what's already there. It can't even read the docs and remember standard library functions that were added to the language two years ago. Just so dumb

Another big miscalculation was people not realizing just how loathed he was. People that were barely aware of him posted publicly and privately in support, thinking it was uncontroversial, and were met with huge backlash. They didn't care enough about him to want to take that kind of heat

Luckyyy, Utah's is still tied up in the courts, and so it's currently still a textbook example of gerrymandering. Every single district pulls out democratic voters from Salt Lake in the most obviously corrupt way possible

With all the weird carve outs for finishing missions and having Israel's ceasefire start 12 hours after Iran's, it seems specifically designed for this. Israel doesn't even need to stop bombarding Iran for a second in order for them to claim Iran broke the ceasefire

We have a madman in the White House who is actively trying to trigger total war. If Jeffries, Schumer, or any other Democratic leaders try to justify this, shrug indifferently, or write a strongly-worded letter and call it a day, they need to step down or be aggressively primaried.

the thing I hate most about that rfk quote is that autistic lives have value and worth and beauty and dignity whether they are able to do the things other people do or not. no one is defined by ability or lack thereof and to frame divergence as lack is monster stuff, utterly godless

tumblr user nitewrighter says:
Me: I don’t get it. I thought I was doing a lot better than I was a few years ago. I’m like 10 times more on top of things than I used to be. How does everything feel terrible now?

The Tiny Me in OSHA-approved Hi-Vis Gear Who lives in my brain and pulls all the levers: Boss, it’s the fascism. You’re completely gunked up with cortisol due to the fact that your entire daily life is now underscored with a haunting awareness of the rapid erosion of your rights, dignity, and any and all social safety nets, and you’re also bearing witness to the most vulnerable people immediately being persecuted. This creates a natural stress response that basically means you’re going to continue having memory and organizational problems, as well as emotional imbalances.

Me: BUT I HAVE A BULLET JOURNAL AND I MEDITATE NOW.

Tiny OSHA Me: BOSS, THE FASCISM.

I can't remember the last time I saw an article just focus on this. Not that they've bent the truth or misrepresented a few facts a little, but that every single solitary thing that the GOP says on the topic is a stone cold lie with absolutely no basis in reality. ftw.usatoday.com/story/sports...
They're lying to you about transgender women and girls in sports
Michelle R. Martinelli
For The WinThey’re lying about transgender people in this world. They’re lying about what LGBTQ+ inclusion in society really means, and they’re lying about trans people in sports. They’re lying about a “transgender cult” and “transgender insanity,” about teachers indoctrinating kids with “transgender ideology” and about “making mice transgender.”

Right-wing activists, anti-trans bigots, many politicians, the president — they’re lying to you about many things but especially trans women and girls in sports. They’re lying about transgender athletes supposedly ruining women’s sports, and they’re lying about this being a ubiquitous “problem.”

They are deliberately and strategically lying about trans folks’ lives, about trans athletes and about their own disingenuous motivations for pushing these lies. They don’t care because they keep doing it.

Worse, it’s working. They're lying about trans people, especially trans women and girls in sports, probably, in part, because the actual data doesn't support their arguments.
Yet several states have their own bans against trans athletes competing in sports consistent with their gender identity, despite expert estimates of fewer than 100 trans high school athletes nationwide. In 2022, Utah's Republican governor, Spencer Cox, vetoed an anti-transgender bill - it was eventually overruled by the legislature - and outlined his rationale. Along with the high suicide rates for trans youth, he noted that of 75,000 high school athletes in the state, four identified as trans and just one student was playing girls' sports. A whole state bill targeting four athletes, but really, one.

And just a reminder for anyone that needs it, this is so stupidly, deeply ingrained in our culture. Even when you can break through it and find the kindness to help others, don't forget to apply that empathy back to yourself. You also deserve a video game when you're struggling! Guilt free!

What's crazy is that even without source control, any method of doing a group project outside of passing a single computer back and forth is going to produce backups. Like, nobody emailed someone else some code at any point in the project? Did they send diffs over snapchat?

It's such a double standard too, many of the most revered authors go out of their way to break the rules. The assumption is they're doing it on purpose, for some grand literary reason, and everyone else is fumbling around in the dark accidentally breaking the rules because they don't know any better
