It's time to crack out this classic from 2016. It's still simplified, but it's good fun and does try to engage with the benefits and drawbacks of each system. And has some now hilariously out of date references to Canadian politics.

Cracking thread here. And underlines how successive governments - despite consistently banging on about how maths, science and analytics skills are the only ones worth learning - fail to apply these skills to any of their decision making. There were red flags that should have been obvious here.

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

You know when people say "attacks on Jewish people based on Israel's actions are anti-Semitic [which they obviously are!] because a person's Jewish faith and / or heritage is unrelated to their relationship to Israel". Well then, how does this help?

Never would have happened if Ian Fletcher were still at the helm, right @hughbon.bsky.social? Or rather, would have happened, but at least there would have been a clever bit of explanation (but not before someone suggested a possible compromise - Mexico playing at 6pm and England at midday)

You can't withdraw someone else's comment from the record. You can offer them the chance to withdraw it (although that doesn't change the fact that they said it) or you can apologise to listeners for it having been said. This gives Johnson too much credit (as he would never withdraw this).

Absolutely this. I want to know how my leaders are arriving at the decisions they arrive at, and recognition of the fact that there are always trade-offs. The decisions should be driven by analysis of costs / risks, the appetite for which should be driven by the government's clear vision.

A sad day for Strickland fans everywhere. Hope he's slacking off somewhere nice now. But a reminder for us all to (re)read @ryannorth.ca 's epic work of literary criticism, B^F. btothef.tumblr.com/tagged/bttf/...
Mr Strickland nose to nose with Marty McFly in 1985, with "Slacker" superimposed in the classic Back to the Future font.Excerpt from Ryan North's literally critique of the novelisation of Back to the Future - except features Strickland worried about his own ability to combat deceitfulness, and an assessment that his world view includes the possible existence of child physicians. Concludes with Marty's assessment of Strickland as a "moral bloodhound", who as of 26/03/26 has followed the scent to the very end of the hunt and is now, hopefully, hunting slackers in a better place.

Good summary from Naomi. I'm surprised the people saying "he should at least do a proper apology" don't consider how unbelievably mentally exhausting it would be for people with this variety of tourettes to have to constantly apologise "properly" for something they cannot control.

Um. Isn't that £5k supposed to be spent on, you know, educating the child? I know I'm in danger of reductio ad absurdam, but if you spend £5k on marketing to gain £5,500 in central funding, but now have an extra child to teach, that's not a win, is it?

I agree, so long as housing density isn't at the expense of community spaces. We've had lots of new housing in N. Bristol (which is good), but in a quest for density (and it's friend, profit) the developers have forgotten things like retail space, green space, restaurants, cafes, room for clubs...

I know a child, born in France, who came to the UK aged 5, speaking no English. They are now 7 and are as fluent as any child you could meet. I wouldn't know English was their 2nd language if i hadn't been told. The BBC would suggest this child "doesn't speak English fluently".

I really love everyone that says "Duolingo is rubbish because it doesn't teach as well as a human". Of course it doesn't. That's not what it's for. And it's £90 for 5 people per year! How much in person tuition are you expecting for that! DL doesn't teach you to fluency - that's not its goal.

A little bit of analysis I've done shows that the salary sacrifice changes in the budget today fall most heavily in those between 20-60k, and much less on those above, both in absolute and % terms. This is because NI falls to 2% above ~50k so the impact of the additional NI to pay is much smaller

When people say "but the flag is just a symbol of England / the UK" this is the kind of thing that makes me uneasy. National pride is great. Getting a nativity scrapped because you've become convinced any compassion to foreigners is inherently wrong is definitely not.

The rationale here is incredible. The industry says its lobbying has prevented a "tick box exercise". That's where you rubber stamp something without having done anything meaningful or effected any change, right? So, like classing new houses as 'green' without basic stuff like swift boxes, then?
