Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Presumably they're selecting one from each category? So they've ordered by vote, but grouped by category - so you have a nice clear ranking by category. 110
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Except the ship's computer didn't just occasionally get it wrong. For my AGI needs a higher accuracy rate (I know it's pretty high already) and crucially, a near 100% reliable mechanism to notify the user when information is incomplete, unreliable, or based on bias or assumptions. 000
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 29/09/2026It's time to crack out this classic from 2016. It's still simplified, but it's good fun and does try to engage with the benefits and drawbacks of each system. And has some now hilariously out of date references to Canadian politics.ncase.meTo Build a Better Ballotan interactive guide to alternative voting systems 000
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Yeah, fair challenge. I revise my statement to "most of their decision making" 000
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 28/09/2026My favourite thing about this story is that they've pixelated her face in the article, but not on the photo that accompanies the link. 110
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Cracking thread here. And underlines how successive governments - despite consistently banging on about how maths, science and analytics skills are the only ones worth learning - fail to apply these skills to any of their decision making. There were red flags that should have been obvious here. 110
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I absolutely cannot see any possible incentive for cheating at wordle. If that 0.19% is real people, that is truly bizarre behaviour. 120
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 22/09/2026And it's a miserable sign of the times that I'm thinking "which of the many possible countries / parties / organisations is he alluding to" 280
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 18/09/2026I was the rat king for a while after a particularly enthusiastic play through of Betrayal in the House on the Hill. It's a surprisingly enjoyable persona. 000
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 17/09/2026I am genuinely curious - have you never seen them eat an orange previously? Have they always opened the orange privately? Are oranges an infrequently eaten in your house? If you a challenged me to hide how I eat an orange from my wife for 21 years I would find that difficult - how did she do it!? 000
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 16/09/2026My "how much shit am I in it if it goes horribly wrong" method of deciding which situations are appropriate for AI continues undefeated. 020

Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 13/09/2026In Bristol the M-Shed, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, and the Arnolfini are all free. 120
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Or indeed "we priced this according to the gain we think we should have made, rather than what the property is actually worth". 150
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Ah, the ol' "wave after wave until they reach their kill limit" tactic. 010
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 11/09/2026That one was forced on them for writers strike reasons (or some other factor I can't currently recall), I think, so possibly falls outside the definition of "deliberate" bottle episode. 120
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Fine, it's peak generation o'clock, but we're still getting 4.35kW out of our 4.85kW system today. Not too shabby. 000
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Urgh. Yup, skipping to a day time train might get you there faster. And curious that the route loops you up through NL - frustratingly roundabout path. 110
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 11/09/2026What was the end-to-end journey time. And did you actually end up where you wanted to get? This is a horror story for someone like me that dreams of using trains more to get across Europe. 100
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 10/09/2026If I were skilled enough at Photoshop to put her in a hotdog costume you know Shabana would be saying "we're trying to find the guy who did this" right about now. 000
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Why, if you've generated an AI "actor" would you generate one that answers questions like it's reading them off a script? I thought the delivery was really unnatural. 000

Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 08/09/2026The longer answer - sometimes RNLI isn't value for money. There are areas which use lots of money but have very few launches etc (I'm not an expert, so that's clumsy wording). If you're a public body you have to justify use of taxpayers funds. RNLI wants to maximise lifesaving regardless of cost. 110
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 08/09/2026Even better than a single donation is to set up a regular donation (if you're lucky enough to be able to afford it). A side benefit for me is that each month I get a magazine full of pictures of boats which provides great entertainment for two small children! 280
Reposted by Tom AdamsJonn Elledge @jonnelledge.bsky.social · 07/09/2026I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do. 632780879

Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 06/09/2026Pharoah. The RTS for those of us that know that real fun comes from meticulous supply chain management. What shouts "entertainment" more than ensuring your fancier residences have enough linen for their mortuary? 011

Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 01/09/2026But the point remains that no one ever wants to go to "the concourse". You want to go to the platform, or the café, or the exit, or the toilet. Sign those things! You might end up with more things to write, but it will be infinitely simpler and more useful than "concourse". 010
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 01/09/2026That's a fun little trick - kind of ensures you stick to basic structures and familiar vocabulary. I'll give it a try! 010
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 01/09/2026The concourse is where the ticket office and exit are, and the bridge is the way to the trains, so I'd probably go with "Ticket Office / Exit" and "Trains". People want to know where the thing they want to do is (eg, where do I get on the train) not what the technical name for the room is. 240
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 01/09/2026And, at the very least, to use regular English! The lift on Bristol Parkway station has floors labelled "bridge link" and "concourse". We have a strange obsession with using synonyms to make things sound fancier but it's a nightmare for tourists and the English-as-second-language folks! 10563

Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 28/08/2026ICE is involved in a quarrel between Laura Looker, Marjorie Taylor-Green, and Milo Yianopoulos. I have officially lost all of the ends of the yarn in this tangle. 010
Tom Adams @tomadam.bsky.social · 27/08/2026I don't disagree with you - but I would like to understand the more rationale reading (which doesn't attribute thought to the machines). They did still hack into HuggingFace which presumably was on the "don't do this" list - so even without consciousness type alarmism it's still pretty bad, right? 210
