Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

We cannot trust AI companies to self-regulate. They’ve already proven incapable and unwilling to do it on their own. Congress needs to intervene.

The Chicago Cubs have maintained an awfully low profile for a team that 1) wins often, and by a lot of runs, 2) homers more than anyone, and 3) has an increasingly sure-thing MVP patrolling center…

Police Story is an action masterpiece, Grand Budapest Hotel is Wes Anderson's best, Before Sunrise is a perfect romance movie, and The Third Man is just...so good.

I saw too many Final Fantasy/Washington Reflecting Pool mashup memes this week, and am throwing my hat in the ring for #makeaterriblecomicday2026.

2026 Oscars are fun! Conan O'Brien still the best host, had a crazy tie (in a field no one saw, but still), and Frankenstein won the exact Oscars it deserved. Train Dreams shoulda won Cinematography. Still don't understand the One Battle hype.

Read Bad Company by @greenwell.bsky.social. It's one story you probably know (Toys r us) and three that you might not know all on the extent of private greed and shortsightedness. Could be a huge bummer but she finds great stories of people banding together to reclaim the mission from the business.

What a horrible time to be an artist of any kind. Already, every creative pie has been sliced into ever-tinier pieces by the huge number of people making art. Games, for example, published per month on Steam have DOUBLED since 2020! There's only so many new buyers!

Baffling move. Pathetic abandonment of all artistic soul and short sighted to the extreme. The only ways this makes sense are to cut costs and quality (obvious; terrible long term strategy) or to enter into some agreement to demolish OpenAI if they can't keep its IP secure (I can hope).

Conflating machine learning tools with GenAI and LLMs are such a favorite of these bad faith arguments, too. Like, machines studying X-rays to better understand cancer is not the same thing as Open AI swallowing all my books via piracy to regurgitate sentences that sound similar. It's just not.

This is in the replies and it demonstrates a real issue which is if you find profundity from an AI, you’re responding to something profound a human being wrote that was vacuumed up and what ends up happening is you thank AI and not only don’t thank the person, you have no idea they were involved

I thought this sounded familiar and it turns out it literally just found an old George RR
Martin quote and wrote a short story out of it:
George R.R. Martin > Quotes > Quotable Quote (?)
"I think there are two types of writers, the architects and the gardeners.
The architects plan everything ahead of time, like an architect building a house. They know how many rooms are going to be in the house, what kind of roof they're going to have, where the wires are going to run, what kind of plumbing there's going to be. They have the whole thing
designed and blueprinted out before they even nail the first board up. The gardeners dig a hole, drop in a seed and water it. They kind of know what seed it is, they know if planted a fantasy seed or mystery seed or whatever. But as the plant comes up and they water it, they don't know how many branches it's going to have, they find out as it grows. And I'm much more a gardener than an architect."
