On England's match on Saturday night, which I watched last night and was somewhat surprised to find that no-one had warned me how really odd watching a match played in front of 6,000 squawking kids might be. (I reckon it put the Croatia players off) unexpecteddelirium.substack.com/p/the-monday...

The Monday Almanac: England Have a Thoroughly Strange Saturday Night in Croatia
A crowd of 6,000 lent an otherworldly atmosphere to the Nations League match between Croatia and England, but the shrieking of thousands of kids didn’t seem to do the home side much good.

As good as it makes us look, the sold out Emirates line needs to stop. It’s only happened a handful of times. It’s def not happening every other week.
Screenshot of text: They've dominated women's football, winning every single domestic honour while also becoming the only English side to win the Champions League, twice. That's all happened against the backdrop of an exploding fan base and sold out Emirates stadium every week.

Screenshot of text: In all the fingerpointing over the City controversy, one name has been absent from criticism. Richard Scudamore, the former executive chairman of the Premier League, oversaw this farrago.
When Scudamore joined the ruling body in 1999, the domestic television deal was valued at £670 million. When he departed into retirement in 2018, the price for TV rights had grown to £5.14 billion.
Scudamore is an impressive negotiator. He made the top-flight clubs richer than they could have imagined at the turn of the millennium. But, on his watch, Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea, the Glazers performed a leveraged buyout of Manchester United, George Gillett and Tom Hicks brought financial chaos to Liverpool and, of course, Abu Dhabi acquired City.Screenshot of text: A conversation in, I think, 2008 may go some way to answering that question. At a Premier League lunch for senior journalists in a private room in a West End restaurant, another editor and I brought up the leveraged buyouts of Liverpool and United. These, we suggested, were an existential threat to the game.
Scudamore's response was offhand. The markets will sort it, he told us.
The markets never did.
The quest to make money for the clubs became all-consuming. Reflecting on a period when oligarchs and sovereign states became a fixture in the English game, another senior figure in the sport told me, "Everything was for sale - including the soul of football."Screenshot of text: Scudamore did a great job with the television rights. When he left - with Chelsea's Bruce Buck strongarming clubs to throw £250,000 each into the pot for his gendoff gift - cheats dominated the title race. His entire tenure at the Premier League needs reappraisal. The realisation that money isn't everything is dawning on some.

Screenshot of text: Neither of these narratives persuades me Rather, I believe the contemporary far right is a cross-class phenomenon. One way to understand it is as a movement that brings together an underclass that has given up waiting on the promises of modernisation - formal work, accountable institutions, real equality before the law - and an elite who no longer even pretends those promises are on offer.Screenshot of text: When politics is colonised by the attention economy, then public discourse becomes a constantly shifting sea of outrage. Today, this; tomorrow, that. It is a state of affairs entirely inimical to emancipatory politics, which is predicated on bolstering people's capacity to take decisions about their collective fate and participate in sustained efforts to change the status quo. Trump keeps us busy with headlines and late-night posts, while the real work of destruction goes on in the background.Screenshot of text: It's clear why the powerful would be attracted to such a model that promisese them untrammelled enjoyment of power.
But why do the weakest also vote for it?
Because of the psychological compensations included in the package.
The promise is: 'even if you remain hyper-exploited at your job, even if your life expectations are daily shrinking, we will ensure that there is at least one sphere of life in which your power runs free. At home, you can take it out on your wife or your kids, no one will interfere; and no one can tell you not to make jokes about Black people or gay people?

Screenshot of text: But we live in an angry, dysregulated and impatient society, and that patience with the League itself will not last for long. If this is the decision reached by the independent panel, then that needs to be clarified as soon as possible, and if there are to be sanctions, then they need to be decided upon and put in place as soon as possible too. The Premier League has long appeared bulletproof from the outside, but this is damaging the reputation of the
"brand" and they will be under even greater scrutiny now over what comes next.

I'm wondering if all the bullish pre-season talk from the club about going for the title inadvertently put the players under too much pressure and now they're playing with a fear of failure? Of course, we should be going for the league but would it have been smarter to keep that talk in-house?
