Rats are capable of complex problem-solving, they can use tools, and they will actively choose to rescue a trapped companion even if it means sacrificing food for themselves. They communicate through ultrasonic giggles when happy, and experience deep bonds with their family units.

They're not vermin, and they're not pests either. Rats are empathetic, highly intelligent animals who possess social dynamics surprisingly similar to our own.

Oh, I’ve just remembered, the mate who worked on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Palladium also said Blessed would come in and say he was GOING TO MARS WITH NASA, and she’d say “Oh, when are you doing that, Brian?” And the reply would be something like “NEXT MONTH!”

Norwich Apex's ecologist says wildlife by Marston Marshes is "habituated" to light. Yet its own landscape report says there's little light there now and the data centre would have a "major-moderate adverse" night-time effect. At the same time, no bat surveys were done. Which is it?

Well, then... happy 363rd anniversary to this entry from the Diary of Samuel Pepys, in which the saga of his constipation continues
9th. And did keep my bed most of this morning, my body I find being still bound and little wind, and so my pain returned again, though not so bad, but keeping my body with warm clothes very hot I made shift to endure it, and at noon sent word to Mr. Hollyard of my condition, that I could neither have a natural stool nor break wind, and by that means still in pain and fre-quent offering to make water. So he sent me two bottles of drink and some syrup, one bottle to take now and the other tomorrow morning. So in the evening, after Commissioner Pett, who came to visit me, and was going to Chatham, but methinks do talk to me in quite another manner, doubtfully and shyly, and like a stranger, to what he did heretofore. After I saw he was gone I did drink one of them, but it was a most loathsome draught, and did keep myself warm after it, and had that afternoon still a stool or two, but in no plenty, nor any wind almost carried away, and so to bed. In no great pain, but do not think myself likely to be well till I have a freedom of stool and wind. Most of this day and afternoon my wife and I did spend together in setting things now up and in order in her closet, which indeed is, and will be, when I can get her some more things to put in it, a very pleasant place, and is at present very pretty, and such as she, I hope, will find great content in. So to bed.

Judi Dench on working with Frances Barber
As for Frankie's gift ... The play, among other things, is a discussion about unconventional sexual acts and so Frankie Barber, as a first-night present, bought me a double-ended dildo. It was about two metres long and all bendy - you could wear it as a scarf, which I did once when the company gathered for director's notes. But I had no idea where to keep it. I couldn't take it home, where my young grandson often came to stay, so in the end I hung it over Diana Rigg's portrait in my dressing room. My reasoning being that any visitors would be so arrested by the beautiful image of Diana, they wouldn't notice this massive penis dangling down each side of the frame.
But then one day I knew the cleaner had spotted it because when I arrived in my dressing room for that evening's performance, it was coiled up on my make-up table like a Cumberland sausage.

Is there a coat of arms more suited to the Halloween season than this one?! This image comes from a German manuscript made up of a collection of coats of arms which relate mainly to the Holy Roman Empire. It was probably written in southwest Germany or Switzerland, around the early 16th century.

Petrichor [PET-rih-kor] (n.) - The pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather. Use: "The petrichor of a sudden summer shower, mingled with the golden light of the setting sun, transported me straight back to my boyhood on an Iowa farm.”
A "Grandiloquent Word of the Day" meme featuring “Petrichor,” defined as the pleasant smell accompanying the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather. On the right, a black-and-white illustration depicts two figures caught in a heavy rainstorm, shielding their faces beneath their hats. On the left, ornate typography presents the word, its pronunciation, definition, and an example sentence recalling a summer shower and childhood on an Iowa farm.
