Today the UK is putting into practice aggressive restrictions on trans people using toilets and changing rooms. This follows a complex legal/political mess over two years. The UK was among the best countries in Europe on LGBTQ rights; now it's among the worst. www.liberalcurrents.com/the-end-of-t...

As the latest heatwave continues to set records across Europe, climate-related disasters are an increasingly existential problem for the continent. Theodoros Ntounias explores the relationship between climate change and public trust in Europe on our blog: ucigcc.org/blog/climate...

Everyone should join their union or start one if it does not exist. Many unions proudly and effectively champion the rule of law and protect their (often minoritized) constituents. But assuming that unions, under current conditions, can single-handedly protect democracy is aspirational at best.

I am unspeakably angry about this turnout gap figure, and it gives insight into the whole ballgame for gutting the VRA. Alito points out that Black turnout exceeded White turnout twice in 5 elections. The argument is garbage 1/x

This is one of the reasons I don't record lectures (except for students with a documented need). A direct threat to our labor as academics, in addition to being completely devoid of actual educational content.

It (really) sucks being a mayor in the middle of the third wave of autocratization and we need to care about it more

Really nuts how many men were like "Me Too went too far, and I need to email Jeffrey Epstein about it."

”College kids are the real threat to free speech” was always for rubes and marks who wanted the freedom to be bigoted without repercussions. If you are still writing that at this point you are incapable of acknowledging actual threats or high on your own supply.

Really hard to look at this and all the other examples of bravery and kindness from ordinary people in this moment not think also of the tremendous cowardice exhibited over the past year by some of the richest, most well-protected people in business, media and politics

“Fascism, as well as ostensible crisis of national character that fascists use to justify it, are both very frightening to me”—while fascists are currently in power—can only be read as fascist apologia.

Tarik is absolutely correct and we American academics need to develop a collective response. How can we continue to support our academic community and worthwhile professional organizations while also withholding the economic stimulus of our meetings to send a message to relevant stakeholders?

When JD Vance called to 'attack universities,' he meant faculty and students. Both are the 'enemy.' When he praises Orban’s approach to 'left wing domination of universities,' he means privatizing public universities and placing them under the control of right-wing foundations led by Trump allies.
A screenshot of a block of text, with a portion highlighted in blue. The text is a quote from a speech, stating that universities control knowledge and truth in society, and that conservatives should ‘honestly and aggressively attack the universities in this country’ to achieve their goals. The highlighted portion specifically emphasizes the call to action against universities.A screenshot of a text excerpt from an interview between Margaret Brennan and Senator J.D. Vance. The highlighted portion quotes Vance stating that ‘the closest conservatives have ever gotten to successfully dealing with the left wing domination of universities is Viktor Orban’s approach in Hungary’ and that ‘his way has to be the model for us.’ The conversation continues with Brennan asking if he is advocating a similar approach in the United States, referencing Orban’s control of state universities through foundations run by allies. Vance responds by claiming that U.S. universities are controlled by left-wing foundations despite being funded by taxpayers.
