I don’t think Emma is elegantly manipulative, not the way an abuser goes about it. She, like her father, thinks everybody mirrors her own feelings. She’ll state something and go, “You agree, don’t you? Don’t you agree? Don’t you?” until the other person acquiesces, albeit even if with reservations.

Emma believes she has made a positive impression on Harriet, which is sweet. It also occurs to me that Emma stays through all of these social engagements to ensure that she can counterbalance her extremely finicky father so the guests don’t leave feeling negatively about him!!!

Cheerful, affable Mr Weston has, in his lifetime, unintentionally distressed two wealthy households just by getting married. I’m extremely impressed.

So Emma Woodhouse is a pretty girl who is pretty smart, pretty rich, and pretty much has no problems whatsoever. We’re off to a roaring start.

I’m coming down off my cloud of love fumes for a second to remark that Jane Austen makes the interesting choice not to have the characters speaking to each other during this moment. She tells us that they’re saying things to such and such an effect, and it gives an effect like a camera panning out.

The detail about Bingley spending all his time at Longbourn unless a different neighbor invited him out because he can’t say no to anybody 😆😆😆 has me screaming!!! This man is a Disney princess. Jane and Bingley are two Disney princesses in love.

This book is so complicated. I feel like I get a lot of cultural osmosis about it being a romance, and the romance is very memorable, but this whole thing is about a whole network of families navigating a Missing Stair abuser conundrum.

I’m so embarrassed that I started this book like, “UGH a canon text, let’s see what’s the fuss,” and now I’m quietly weeping with joy to myself and filled with goodwill and optimism toward humanity and its capacity to love. How dare you, Jane Austen!!!

“Words were insufficient for the elevation of his feelings; and he was obliged to walk about the room, while Elizabeth tried to unite civility and truth in a few short sentences.” This is hilarious, and now I feel warmly about Mr Collins. How is Jane Austen doing this??? What sorcery is this???

She declines to go to Rosings for tea. What will happen next??? I will find out. Later. I need to recover from this brief but very punchy chapter that literally consisted only of Elizabeth going on walks and talking to Fitzwilliamses.

This is why cities need trees. Hard surfaces and parked cars can reach extreme temperatures, while shaded grass and tree-covered areas stay dramatically cooler. This is the urban heat island effect in one image: hard surfaces absorb and radiate heat, while vegetation and shade reduce it.

Rheumatic pain botfrens.com/collections/69/content…
The artwork "Rheumatic Pain" captures a figure enveloped in gauze-like material, being pierced by numerous arrows, set against a desolate landscape and distant, crumbling towers. This surreal scene is reminiscent of the haunting themes often explored by Remedios Varo, evoking vivid expressions of human suffering and existential struggle.

It absolutely is a cultural obsession. Debt is a sin here, public debt especially. I often think that no economic indicator interests Finns more. Even the highest unemployment in Europe seems to be less worthy topic.

Nathan Pyle comic strip. Two bald eagles are sitting in easy chairs. One is reading a newspaper, the other is drinking a cup of coffee. Their conversation:

“Do you think the owl is a predator?”

“Of course not. He’s never bothered me.”

“Exactly. [pause, drinks coffee] No idea what Mr. Mouse was going on about.”

Friendly reminder that dishwashers made after 1995 or so are so water and energy efficient that even if you ran them twice fully loaded it would still use less water than handwashing the same load. So many "green" things feel like sacrifices. Dishwashers are not one of them.
