Today the lot's use is still car-centric, and the streetscape even more hostile. Thankfully this is just one corner of the neighborhood. In fact, the ice cream spot immediately behind the camera here is pretty great!
The same road today, the service station replaced by a newer gas station building cum liquor store.

Bardstown Rd. at Speed Ave., Louisville, KY, 1940. The Bardstown Rd. streetcars were struggling at this point, and only assistance from the federal government during WWII kept it going a few more years. Gas stations proliferate in the neighborhood. #LouisvilleTransitHistory

I am once again saying that white flight private schools are engines of fascism, not only because of what they teach, but more importantly you have zero chance of getting your ass beat for being racist.

The area has gotten a lot more dense in the past century! But the neighborhood is still walkable and well-served by transit.
The same street today, but the only similarity is the corner building, now painted white.

Bardstown Rd. at Deerwood Ave., Louisville, KY. 1932. Looking towards downtown along Bardstown Rd. we can see a trolley negotiating the road with an early car. At this time, the line would have operated from Douglass Loop to Shawnee. #LouisvilleTransitHistory
A black and white photo of a trolley moving away from the camera on a city street. The street is a mixture of tracks, asphalt, and brick. A two-story commercial building sits on the corner.

So for example, we don’t get rid of all the Federalist Society judges just to get rid of the Federalist Society judges. We do it so that we can regulate out of existence all the car dealers and check cashing places and gambling websites and crypto exchanges and fraternities and vulture capitalists.

The A&P building is still there! And Frankfort Ave. experienced a road diet that added... Well, I guess 3 blocks of unprotected bike lane is better than nothing. Still, our more walkable neighborhoods deserve better!
The same streetscape today, in front of the same building, now a neighborhood bar. Fewer streetcar tracks and more cars.

Frankfort Ave. at Pope St., Louisville, KY. 1938. A crowd stands outside the A&P grocery store on a rainy day as a Market St bound streetcar passes in front. For a while, Frankfort Ave. was served by two separate streetcar lines, to avoid crossing over L&N tracks. #LouisvilleTransitHistory

like wow what negligence. they tore down a good looking fence to put this up!!!
Regardless of the condition of the masonry construction on the 1418 side, the gaps and missing mortar on the 1416 side are alarming, especially for a wall of the present height and topped with a wooden fence. Pressure on the wooden topper fence near the east end revealed it moves readily. Pressure was not applied to the CMU wall for fear of overturning. It is recommended that all persons stay well away from the wall until it can be removed.
Due to the poor construction of the wall, it should be immediately temporarily braced until it can be removed.

and other such complaints.Pictures of missing mortar in a terrifying CMU wall.

You can see the same houses today, but the rail line has been replaced with a frontage road in the same right-of-way. Definitely a downgrade compared to real transit!
The same suburban scene today, but the rail right of way is replaced with a small frontage road. The same suburban houses sit on the same street, though.

The streetscape is only slightly different today! Less transit, better bike lanes, and some of the same familiar facades. Nearby blocks, unfortunately, remain victims of Louisville's urban parking lot infestation.
The same streetscape today. More trees, and a large university building on the corner, and no transit, but some of the same facades peek out.
