Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 3hToday the area is a 5 lane arterial stroad, with strip malls, subdivision, and excellent bike infrastructure including sharrows. The recent TARC budget cuts have removed most of J-town's bus service. The Owings Family farmhouse is still standing just a few blocks from here, though! 130
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 3hTaylorsville Rd., near the Owings Family Farm, about a mile east of downtown Jeffersontown, KY. 1929. The interurban line to J-town was one of the first to fall, but you can see the electrified tracks to the north of the road here, before they cross the Southern Railroad. #LouisvilleTransitHistory 140
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 23hNow that service on my street is more frequent and predictable, I can actually *use* the bus! 1131
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 08/10/2026Frankfort Ave. underwent an excellent road diet in the past few years, and the neighborhood has held on to this commercial strip almost verbatim. Now give me a bike path between the road and the railroad! 030
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 08/10/2026Frankfort Ave. at Bayly Ave., Louisville, KY. 1930. The streetcar lines here would have led from the Market Street line, and up Payne Street, eventually reaching St. Mathews, at which point the interurban system took over. Just a few feet behind the camera are L&N's tracks #LouisvilleTransitHistory 170
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 08/10/2026This is the kind of rule change that major league baseball needs to keep it interesting, and I'm convinced that tgirl baseball is the vehicle we can use to make it happen 040
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 08/10/2026I should move to Portland to establish residency to get a Master's in Urban Planning 050
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 06/10/2026Today the lot's use is still car-centric, and the streetscape even more hostile. Thankfully this is just one corner of the neighborhood. In fact, the ice cream spot immediately behind the camera here is pretty great! 120
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 06/10/2026Bardstown Rd. at Speed Ave., Louisville, KY, 1940. The Bardstown Rd. streetcars were struggling at this point, and only assistance from the federal government during WWII kept it going a few more years. Gas stations proliferate in the neighborhood. #LouisvilleTransitHistory 170
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 06/10/2026The area has gotten a lot more dense in the past century! But the neighborhood is still walkable and well-served by transit. 030
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 06/10/2026Bardstown Rd. at Deerwood Ave., Louisville, KY. 1932. Looking towards downtown along Bardstown Rd. we can see a trolley negotiating the road with an early car. At this time, the line would have operated from Douglass Loop to Shawnee. #LouisvilleTransitHistory 151

Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 02/10/2026The A&P building is still there! And Frankfort Ave. experienced a road diet that added... Well, I guess 3 blocks of unprotected bike lane is better than nothing. Still, our more walkable neighborhoods deserve better! 030
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 02/10/2026Frankfort Ave. at Pope St., Louisville, KY. 1938. A crowd stands outside the A&P grocery store on a rainy day as a Market St bound streetcar passes in front. For a while, Frankfort Ave. was served by two separate streetcar lines, to avoid crossing over L&N tracks. #LouisvilleTransitHistory 120
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 02/10/2026like wow what negligence. they tore down a good looking fence to put this up!!! 030
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 01/10/2026You can see the same houses today, but the rail line has been replaced with a frontage road in the same right-of-way. Definitely a downgrade compared to real transit! 040
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 01/10/2026West Kenwood Drive at Fay Ave., Louisville, KY. 1943. Part of the 4th street line running all the way downtown, this was the final few feet of the longest-running streetcar line in Louisville, extending just a few blocks beyond this to a loop at Iroquois Park. #LouisvilleTransitHistory 140
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 30/09/2026A map of proposed freeways in Louisville as of 1969. Thank goodness a lot of these didn't happen, but we're still trying to fix the devastation caused by the parts of the 9th Street freeway that did get built. #LouisvilleTransitHistory 041
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 30/09/2026The streetscape is only slightly different today! Less transit, better bike lanes, and some of the same familiar facades. Nearby blocks, unfortunately, remain victims of Louisville's urban parking lot infestation. 020
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 30/09/2026W. Breckenridge St. at 4th St., looking west. 1926, Louisville, KY. This corner is now solidly within the Spalding University campus. Behind the camera, in 1926 and today, is Presentation Academy, the oldest continuously-operating school in Louisville. #LouisvilleTransitHistory 130
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 29/09/2026The landscape is car-dominated today, even more than 1941. Despite the closure of many beloved Louisville institutions in this area, it's still one of the few walkable neighborhood commercial centers in the city. KYTC is currently looking at converting this intersection to a roundabout. 100
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 29/09/2026Bardstown Road at Dundee Ave/Douglass Blvd. 1941, Louisville, KY. Still today known as Douglass loop, this was the turnaround point for Bardstown Road streetcars that wouldn't be venturing further out of town. This line was eventually extended to Doup's Point and beyond. #LouisvilleTransitHistory 132

Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 28/09/2026Here's the intersection today, still showing the slight jog. The CVS across the street opened at the height of the urban shoplifting panic, and closed after less than a year. The city maintains some low-grade efforts to spur development here. 020
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 28/09/2026Preston St. at Broadway, looking south. 1930, Louisville, KY. Then and now, there's a drugstore across the intersection. The building to the right of the intersection is still around, but most of the rest of the area has been flattened into parking lots. #LouisvilleTransitHistory 140
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 27/09/2026The same view today. The city and state have attempted to improve this corridor for active transit, but the bike and walking infrastructure remains subpar for a road where drivers speed 15 mph over the limit. The connection to Payne Street is now partially broken by I-64. 020
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 27/09/2026Lexington Rd. at Payne St, 1929, Louisville, KY. Streetcar tracks from Downtown veer right onto Payne St., and a less-improved Lexington Ave continues ahead. #LouisvilleTransitHistory 120

Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 24/09/2026Here's the same area today, showing some of the destruction caused by the highway. Preston was disconnect, and a looping underpass was made for Burnett (which regularly floods in heavy rain). A frustrating pedestrian overpass exists, technically. 130
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 24/09/2026Preston St at Burnett Ave, looking North. September 10th, 1929, Louisville, KY. Streetcar tracks towards downtown join tracks from Burnett here. The tracks crossing the street are the L&N line towards Cincinnati. In the 50s, this area was decimated to build a freeway. #LouisvilleTransitHistory 161

Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 16/09/2026Here's the same scene roughly today. Like a lot of Louisville's urban fabric, it got ripped out and replaced with a parking lot at some point. But there's good news! Taylor Blvd and New Cut Rd are going to be seeing a heavy road diet in the next couple years! 120
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 16/09/2026Taylor Boulevard at Longfield Ave., Louisville, KY, 1940. Taken in January, there are cars parked by Mary's Sweet Shoppe, with two streetcar tracks passing directly in front. South of Churchill Downs, the line down Taylor Blvd used right of way to the side of the street. #LouisvilleTransitHistory 120

Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 15/09/2026The same view roughly today. More trees! But the same dense street. Downtown Jeffersonville suffers from some of the same "turned our downtown into parking lots" urban fabric destruction as Louisville, but the area around the Big Four is dense and walkable to today! 020
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 15/09/2026Spring Street at Court Ave. looking south in Jeffersonville, IN, 1935. Streetcars and Interurbans would use the Big Four bridge to cross into Louisville. Jeffersonville and New Albany had respectable streetcar networks themselves! #LouisvilleTransitHistory 120

Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 14/09/2026Here's the same view from 2024. This looks very different today, though! Recently, a downtown transit project added real protected bike lanes, over doubling the length of protected bike lane in the city! Market St. is multi-modal again! 030
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 14/09/2026Shelby Street, looking East down Market St, Louisville, KY, 1942. Market street has always been an important place for Louisvillians to gather, and the wide street has accommodated cars for as long as we've had 'em. #LouisvilleTransitHistory 130
Limited Edition Ellie @tldrellie.bsky.evl.im · 12/09/2026I recently bought an unsorted lot of streetcar negatives off ebay, and it included a ton of photos from American Aggregates sites. They bought up old interurbans and repowered them with diesel generators, using them as switchers *into the 1980s*. (cc @interurbanera.bsky.social) 1467
