There are a lot of things about this winter that I still find hard to believe or process, but one of them is that the federal government singled out a state and city, more or less at random, upon which to intentionally inflict massive economic damage.

This is happening to my clients. Makes it impossible for me to know if they're still in Minnesota or even in America. ICE can shuttle them around without my knowledge and, unless they get word to me, I have no way to access them as counsel

Phase II, next year. Hennepin County opted to work with two crews to pack most of the Franklin work done this year. I can't speak to why they chose that approach, but it explains the unusual pace of construction you're seeing.

Anyone who would object to the very idea of Somali (or Latino) participation in one of the most important public safety decisions the city makes does not belong on said panel.

Anyway, here’s a section that will cut you to your core. Odds are 1-2% of the local Latino population has been deported & one community member thinks 25% have left.
“We lost a lot of our community,” said Rudy Trujillo, owner of accounting firm Trujillo Service at 420 E. Lake St., whose clients are mostly Latino immigrants.
He estimates that one in four Latinos left the Twin Cities, either by self-deportation or moving to another state.
No hard data is yet available. About 235,000 Hispanic people lived in the seven-county metro area in 2024, according to census data. The 5,000th detainee (most detainees were of Latin-American descent) was flown out of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in August, Minnesota Reformer reports.

If I hadn't taken my new job, I was about to put my private practice all in on public records lawsuits. The City of Minneapolis has been wantonly violating the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act for years, basically taunting us while they do it. So much low-hanging fruit.

3. So the real practical effect is that the mayor gets 3 strikes to nominate a replacement, but this loop keeps him from advancing to strike one until there is a veto override. 4. Time and public money was spent on this Rube Goldberg logic, and I don’t like that.
000
Tom van de Laarschot @tlaar.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
1. Thanks, that’s exactly what I wanted. 2. I can’t help but agree with the 1976 opinion that allowing veto of a denial is absurd. The CAO’s opinion is essentially that it IS a never ending loop, but that isn’t absurd.
101
Tom van de Laarschot @tlaar.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
Can you explain the procedural logic of 'failing to override the veto of the denial of the nomination'? Does this mean that a 2/3 council majority is effectively required to deny a mayoral appointment, but a simple majority can put it in some kind of limbo state?

If so, more credit to Mushishi for being so original. I've never read the manga. Other anime I'd call out as a casual fan: Baccano is great in a Cowboy Bebop way, and Last Exile might be a bit shounen, but I liked the worldbuilding.

Mushishi is a really good anime, just a little strange/surreal, slower paced, and an interesting window into Japanese folklore (at least I presume its based on folk tales).
