This election should be a youthquake. Kids: enrol to vote, then vote like your lives depend on it, because they do.✊ Everyone else: vote like those young people (who’ll be picking up after *all this mess*, including you in your vulnerable old age) plan to ask you how YOU voted…because they should.

Crouching Bureaucrat, Hidden Ideologue: David Seymour’s Flu Factory

And the punchline: those 90,000 infections generate roughly 400,000 sick days, many of them student days. Schools are merging classes and rostering kids home. The policy manufactures, two weeks later, the exact absence it exists to suppress. 10/

That's roughly 90,000 infections. Around 275,000 lost work days. About $110 million in GDP this winter, range $50-225m. Three times the cost of running the attendance system itself. Attribute even 1 death in 10-20 to this channel and the toll climbs toward $1 billion. 8/

So what happens when policy deliberately increases the number of infectious children inside that engine, during the growth phase of an epidemic? I ran the numbers (as best I could). The attendance regime plausibly accounts for 5-15% of this epidemic. Call it 1 in 10 cases. 7/

Schools are the engine room of a flu season. Holidays alone cut child transmission by 20-29% (Cauchemez et al, Nature). Replicated in Argentina, Hong Kong, the Netherlands. You can watch 2025 Australian case curves drop the day each state's holidays start. 6/

1. The EC ethos has always been, count every vote possible, make it as easy to vote as possible. 2. If staff had to say to someone's face, No, you're not on the roll, you can't vote, they were going to get abused. I'm not working this election, and I really feel for the people who are.
