In August the world lost Dolly Parton, queen of country, actor and philanthropist, and legendary Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, known for her works featuring polka dots. These women have inspired our outfits today with circles and dots, and a healthy dose of gingham and "Dolly energy". ^MT
That feeling when your coffee mug matches your scarf. Yayoi Kusama would approve! The team at Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre are looking a little bit country, and little bit storytimes. On this day 50 years ago a community centre that included a library was opened in Bishopdale by then PM, Robert Muldoon. Bishopdale's library is now Ōrauwhata: Bishopdale Library and Community Centre, opened in 2017.
Centre for all

The Bishopdale Community Centre was the modern counterpart of the village hall, said the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) when he opened the centre on Saturday. The village hall used to be the focal point of all local activity, but a big suburban centre like Bishopdale could do with nothing less than the centre that had been provided, he said.

“The problems of Bishopdale which led to recognition of the need for the centre were initially based on problems associated with young people. But the concept broadened and it is clear f: rm the great variety of activities catered for that no group within the community is not catered for. “We should not allow such centres to be endowed with the idea that they are in sol way unusual or part of some social-rescue operation.

“A centre like this is not a remedy for social ills, a way of keeping youngsters off the streets. This centre and others like it, must be seen as one of the normal basic needs of the community,” said Mr Muldoon.

Next to this is a grainy black and white photo of Robert Muldoon seated, presumably during the opening ceremony.Photo of opening plaque for The Bishopdale Community Centre showing the date of 18 September 1976 and that is was opened by the Prime Minister Rt. Hon. R. D. Muldoon.
