Not the various #Conlangity posts today convincing me to actually finish the IPA table for Kalanifa that I started way back in April 😅 It’s a rather vowel-heavy language, with consonants largely concentrated towards the front. The velar/uvular consonants, though present, are fairly rare.

#WIPSnips - guard While trying to help Cassie find the Librarian, Chaos, true to his name, has been causing some havoc in the Red Palace.

“I see no danger here, but for the one you bring,” the Librarian said condescendingly. “Traipsing in here with your big boots and tridents. Slamming doors and leaving them hanging open to let in all the moisture of the day. The creature has a greater respect for this place than you two.”
The two guards looked to each other. The older of the two, the one who had bowed, gently lowered the glowing trident to the floor. It dimmed substantially as he let go.
“Regretfully, Ma’am, the King has ordered its recapture. We cannot simply leave without it. The creature is not merely a wolf.”
“Well obviously.”
I could almost hear the eye-roll.

Feno staggered as Taengi threw her arms around him.
“Taengi. You made it.” He slowly closed his arms around her in return, albeit much less tightly, and looking quite uncomfortable as he did so. “You are quite late.”
“Sorry, Ayari. Delay to help friends,” She responded, letting him go almost as quickly as she had grasped him, and giving her head a quick, deferential bow towards him. Feno’s brow creased at the sight of our group as we closed in behind her. He might have expected three of us at most. Now, there was four, plus the even more unexpected addition of a large cat.

#WIPSnips - observe From the Harbinger of Death. There’s a lot happening in this snip so context: Wolf ignored Cassie and made the mistake of visiting Az’gor in the Dreamworld. Az’gor retaliated as he doesn’t know the wolf. Cassie took the brunt of his magic as she used her own to protect him.

When it was finally done, with only the echoes of it rippling through as the final wisps of that magic stubbornly clung to me, I came around to find myself curled in human form, panting for air, just barely hearing a familiar voice calling to me nearby. I could still feel Az’gor there but he no longer tore through me. He sat quietly, observing, reaching for an understanding of what had just happened. I turned my mind inward, hoping he might hear me, just as the wolf did.
“Hello, Soul-Searcher.”
I felt his sudden surge of recognition, followed by a sharp wave of guilt.
“My apologies to you, Changer. I did not recognise you.”

#WIPSnips - I don’t have nation (except as part of things like inclination), so we’re going for world. George never dared to feed from Alvath because of Cù Sìth. On landing in Fae, he learns something about the blood of fae that Alvath never told him.

George’s brows lowered. “I’m sure I’ll regret asking, but why?”
“With the fae, you become addicted and lose your immortality. With the salamanders, you risk being burnt to death. Not many vampires survived in this world from before, but they say those who did fed on the animals.”
He blanched noticeably, even under the purplish moonlight. His eyes went unfocused for a few seconds before he came back to the present.

Magda’s spoke up. “Why would Mòrag have Lily? Lily is a witch, to be afforded the relevant immunity by vampires.”
“Says the witch interfering in a vampire Hunt. We’re not the only ones breaking laws here,” Thomas spat. “You witches have immunity because your magic is of the earth. But that girl is no earth-tied witch. After all, if she-” he nodded towards me. “Is fae-blooded, then so is her sister.”
At that, Magda’s heart beat a little faster, but I still didn’t understand.

#WIPSnips - tumble George and Cassie literally crash into each other at the start of Trilogy book 2, both somewhat worse for wear after the events of book 1. This ends up being the scene where George figures out that Cassie is a Changer.

I looked up at George, trying to focus. He was dishevelled, his shirt dirty, tattered and torn slightly at the chest, revealing a thick track of pale, scarred skin and the edge of an old, purple tattoo. I supposed, with my burns, and the covering of dust from our tumble, I must not look much better.
“You good?” He asked. He looked hesitant to come close to me.
I nodded and dropped my hands to my knees.

#WIPSnips - I don’t have “meltdown”, so we’re just going for vibes. The magic of elementals (like a salamanders fire) are heavily tied to emotions. So we have Cassie, cold and wet, with the panther keeping her company as she taps into that magic after a particularly bad day.

I didn’t want to reach into that power, so heavily it was tied to my emotions. I felt I teetered on the edge of a waterfall already. But it was unseasonably cold, and we were soaking wet, the frosty morning air stealing the heat from him and I both. I steeled myself for what was to come, placed a hand on the big log, and let the fire come through. As the flames built, and the emotional turmoil with it, the panther came to lie next to me, his big, damp head sitting heavy on my thigh. My body shivered despite the growing heat of the flames. Once they started, the tears flowed fast, trailing rivers down my cheeks to fall to the ground below. Soon, howls of anguish escaped my chest between deep, racking sobs. Later, when my tears had run dry, and the fire spluttered to bare embers, we sat there together, the weight of the panther the only thing anchoring me to the earth as I drifted in the loneliness that had opened up in my heart.

#WIPSnips - stream The team returns to Alvath’s home just to find it overwhelmingly smelling like blood.

Alvath let out a string of unfamiliar, yet utterly vehement words as he pushed past us, tossing the trident roughly aside as he crossed the floor. He abruptly silenced as he bent to touch his sheepskin. It still looked as fluffy and white as normal to my eyes, but where Alvath touched it, his hand came up red.
“Blood magic?” I asked.
“They think to trap me here, in my own home.” He clenched his bloody fist, a stream of magic flowing to it as he rose slowly to his feet. I wasn’t sure he did it purposely, more like he simply couldn’t stop it. The sheepskin turned dark red and blood-crusted in its wake. He was facing away from me, but I could already see him trembling.

#WIPSnips - tube Back in the book 1 (The Last Changer) draft of the trilogy. I’ve been putting off doing a complete re-write for it, but it needs doing because a lot of lore has changed since this was first drafted. Cassie is just coming around after collapsing from blood loss on Ben’s doorstep.

As my vision cleared a little further, I saw he held his right arm high. In that hand, he held a bag of dark red liquid. I followed the tube down to the needle in my arm. Blood. He was giving me blood. Ben’s hand rested a little lower, cold against the burning heat. With how it felt, I’d almost expected to see the skin stripped away, or, at very least, a vast crop of angry, red blisters, but there was nothing. Not a single mark. I looked towards my other hand, where the burning was also increasing, but at a slower pace. An array of fine silver flakes were stuck to them, but again, no sign of anything wrong. Dried blood cracked off as I wriggled my fingers. At the movement, Ben looked up.

#WIPSnips - payment We’re into spoiler territory here with a very rough draft of the Harbinger of Death (Trilogy book 3) Cassie and Chaos have yet another visitor to their dreamworld, only this one might be setting up a somewhat more permanent residence.

“If you have no option but to stay,” I spoke to the woman over my shoulder. “Do you know how we might protect our dreamworld? It would be preferable if the King and his magic-bearers couldn’t just walk into my inner world as everybody else now seems to. And besides, Chaos despises visitors. Even well-meaning ones.” I ran my hand into Chaos’ fur as he howled a loud warning that echoed around the clearing. George paused at the sound, but Nyx took no heed of it.
“I can see to that,” [spoiler] told me. “Think of it as my payment for being here. But you’d best remove your current visitors before I do.”
I nodded, and started towards George.
“And-” she called after me. I paused, but didn’t turn back to her. “I do not know if he is right, about my magic and your body, but if he is, then I am sorry.”

#WIPSnips - effort The panther has a habit of wandering into other people’s dreams, and occasionally chasing away their nightmares. George didn’t realise it went further than his friends, but given his first meeting with Alvath isn’t going at all well, that might not be a bad thing.

When I felt I could manage it, I rolled onto my back and looked up to him. He hovered over me, making my vulnerability in that moment abundantly clear.
“What-” The effort to gather enough air to speak brought an unexpected cough, and I groaned as it sent another spasm of agony shooting across my shoulder and down my side. When I had gathered myself enough to look back up at him, he still had not moved. “What do…you mean…you know me?” I asked, panting shallow breaths between every other word. “I never…met you…before.”
His lip twitched, like he was amused by something. I struggled to decide if that was a good sign or a really, really bad one.
“Not you,” he clarified, with a nonchalant gesture towards me. “The cat.”

“You made it sound as though most Changers believe they are only open to fae magic,” he explained. “Supernatural magic. If this is true, why do they continue to try for mine?”
“I don’t understand what you mean,” I told him. The panther allowed it, her interest piqued.
“Surely you must know? We fae are not so open to the magic of our own world - that magic which fuels the supernatural in humans. If Fae magic were to have been cast on me, it would have faded into oblivion long ago. This curse of mine - Cù Sìth, as you people call him - was cast upon me by a human witch. It is Earth magic.”

#WIPSnips - well, we’re going to have to go for the one and only “exterior” in the entire manuscript. We’re in the ramp up to the climax here. George takes a small moment to feed, but his mind is otherwise occupied.

The gentle kindnesses. The way that, hidden underneath an exterior of fierce and sometimes violent anger, was an immensely lonely and guilt-ridden man. I realised, with sudden, stark clarity, that I wanted so badly to soothe that anger, ease that loneliness, soften the guilt. Perhaps, in the slim chance I survived these killings, I could, in some way, even if it was just to keep Cù Sìth at bay. But as it went on, I couldn’t help but wonder: could that alone be enough? I wanted him to be mine, properly, and for me to be his, but the very thought of telling him that sat like lead in my stomach. What good would it do to tell him, when, by his own admission, he could never return it?

“There were twenty-two of us Changers before all this started. It’s barely been a month, and we’re down to ten at most. And I don’t understand how they’re all gone. We always lose people when they decide to start killing Changers, but not that many. Usually, it’s the young ones that get caught. The ones that are too cocky, too obvious. Not the old hands that know how this goes. Not the ones that hide in a hole ‘til it’s over. Not the ones with their own beasts to keep them safe.”

#WIPSnips - I don’t have “wedge”, so going for “squeeze” instead. Slightly spoilery, since this is the immediate aftermath of the very first time Alvath asks George to try and stop Cù Sìth from killing someone. Of course, George can’t just leave him lying there after all that.

He tried to push himself up to sitting, but gave up partway through and lay back down on his side.
“I need a few minutes,” he muttered, his eyes drifting closed once more. “He used up too much of my energy. Normally, I would have some of what he took to replace it. This time, there is nothing. But it is worth it, not to have the guilt.” He reached an arm out, his hand searching blindly until it found mine. “Thank you, George,” he said, as he squeezed gently. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you.” He let go again, curling up a little against the wind. “You should go, too, while he’s still subdued.”

#WIPSnips - exhaust Even Will has limits on how much magic he can use at once.

Almost all of his magics had given way, only the barest glow of ethereal blue holding out in his eyes. The dissipation of all the rest had revealed a body I’d never seen in the near sixty years I’d known him. So unrecognisable, that the thought that he’d hidden that much of himself, so thoroughly, for so long, and the sheer amount of energy it must take to maintain, almost shocked me from my anger. Almost.
“That’s none of your fucking business either,” I growled, marching back towards him. With him leaning heavily against the wall in his exhaustion, I towered over him. “What is, is explaining why the fuck you’re here, in my fucking hideout. How long have you known where it was?”

#WIPSnips - teeth There is one question you never ask a Changer: how many magics have they stolen? Alvath, however, has no qualms about asking, and Charlie’s answer is not at all what George expected.

“I am not asking for any details,” Alvath said, with a low wave. “Only a number.”
I could hear the grinding of Charlie’s teeth as he stared back at the fae. I fully expected him to refuse to answer, but he glanced at me for just the briefest moment before muttering: “Eleven. Eleven supernatural and two beasts.”
My eyes widened, and I sat up straighter. Fucking Hell. Eleven? How does a kid gain eleven supernatural magics in, what, two and a half years?

#WIPSnips - collapse George goes to help an old friend, but finds himself trapped, and has little option but to hide. Unfortunately, they already caught the one he was trying to meet.

As the orange light of dawn was replaced by dull, grey wetness, I finally heard the splashing of people making their way through the shallow water and into the cave. The first glimpse I got was of their captive being shoved down into the sand by the dead fire. Bound as he was, he couldn’t stop his fall, and collapsed in a heap. A salt-stained boot rolled him over onto his back, giving me a good look at the face behind the wet mop of grey hair. Sinclair.

#WIPSnips - effective A little later than usual today. The salamander, Magnus, believes he knows what Cassie is, but wants to try something to be sure. Cassie suspects there might be other reasons behind his offer of being the test subject.

I recognised that what he was asking likely had little to do with me finding out what I was, and everything to do with his naïve hope that if he was right, I might take enough of his magic to give him a way out of his current situation. Still… at least I would know. And if he was wrong? Then what was the harm? At least…so long as Magda didn’t find out. She might have let me drink from her, but this was effectively her little brother, and I wasn’t not sure she’d see that the same way.

#Septversary day 2: being myself George would like to, but for the most part he can’t. There are comparatively few people he can be fully himself around, and it only gets worse after it all kicks off. He does have Charlie though, and later, Alvath. To a lesser extent, Will and Old Sinclair, too.

#Septversary day 1: community I’m behind on this before I’ve even started. Community has a big role for both stories. In many ways, both Cassie and George’s circumstances mean many of the communities around them are not safe to be themselves in, but they do end up building new ones.

We’re back in Cassie’s story for #WIPSnips today, with the immediate aftermath of the incident that turned her.

I made it to the front door, a steady stream of deep red splatters landing on the pavement behind me. The pins and needles in my fingers and toes were growing, feeling like their own series of miniature fires, and my heartbeat fluttered far too fast in my ears. My fingers hovered over the bell as a barely cognisant part of my brain recalled that this was the home of a vampire, and I was covered in blood. But there was nowhere else to go. Darkness intruded further on my vision with each passing moment. What choice did I have?
I pressed the button and leaned heavily against the door frame. After an eternity, the door swung wide. I caught one glimpse of Ben’s horrified face before darkness took over.

#WIPSnips - garden Part of another new section which got added after beta feedback. A child with a rarer sort of magic and a heartbreakingly familiar name breaks down some of George’s barriers.

My time was spent first in my room, then walking around the witch’s vast garden, hastened only the endless questioning of Young Sinclair. After that first day, excepting anything relating to beasts, or Earth magic, or anything I thought overly graphic for a child’s ears, I had decided to answer as many of his other questions as honestly as I could. Truthfully, his questions rarely delved into such territory anyway. He had little interest in the topics of how we were made, [blacked out due to spoilers] died. What he wished to know about was the people I knew. Their stories. How they lived. Who they were underneath all that magic. The good and the bad, warts and all. It was soothing to the soul, to speak of all those who once meant so much to me, candidly, and without fear or judgement. Yet it was also difficult, at times immensely so. Our conversations bore as many tears as they did laughter.

This is important. The increasing references to HP isn’t an accident, but trying to normalise it can’t erase the damage JKR is doing. There’s been a big uptick in anti-trans rhetoric here in Scotland over the past 5 years, partly fuelled by the group JKR has pumped tens of thousands of pounds into.

#WIPSnips - going for “broth” instead of soup. A tiny snippet of a new section that got added post-beta feedback.

Time had abandoned me. Not even counting the meals worked to keep track, for each time I closed my eyes, I forgot. Only the rumbling of my stomach was any real indicator of when I had last eaten. It growled now as I watched the strange man carefully spooning steaming, rich-scented broth over three bowls of oats. After laying them down by the hearth to absorb the hot liquid, he sat down, his back to the nearby wall, and, with a weary sigh, lowered his head into his hands. It seemed, somehow, a familiar image, though attempting to wrack my memory brought forth nothing. Now, what few moments I could remember of him were those seared deep by flashes of anger or fear. This was a vision far more somber.

I got this finished up! :) It was done with watercolors, gouache, acrylic ink and walnut ink.
