In which I am introduced to the poet Craig Santos Perez in the public school library at my teen’s curriculum night.
Love in a Time of Climate Change
BY CRAIG SANTOS PEREZ

recycling Pablo Neruda's "Sonnet XVII"

I don't love you as if you were rare earth metals,
conflict diamonds, or reserves of crude oil that cause
war. I love you as one loves the most vulnerable
species: urgently, between the habitat and its loss.

I love you as one loves the last seed saved
within a vault, gestating the heritage of our roots,
and thanks to your body, the taste that ripens
from its fruit still lives sweetly on my tongue.

I love you without knowing how or when this world
will end. I love you organically, without pesticides.
I love you like this because we'll only survive

in the nitrogen rich compost of our embrace,
so close that your emissions of carbon are mine,
so close that your sea rises with my heat.

I think it's ill-advised and anti-democratic to introduce an omnibus bill, cite a crisis, and rush major changes to labour and environmental law. It's going to provoke aggressive resistance and risks, ironically, slowing down the projects the government is so keen on. It's going to be a huge mess.

This is not a tirade against publishing so-called tenure books. I always encourage authors to let me know their institutional timelines and share ours in turn w/ all the caveats abt contingencies. I work with authors on tight schedules but there are no guarantees and it’s agonizing for all involved.

If you’re wondering why people in AI continue to work on developing a technology that many of them believe could result in mass death and even the extinction of humanity, this is a good summary of the reasoning I’ve seen:
jasmine sun @jasminewsun
X.com
I hear roughly 3 reasons people keep working at Al labs despite believing in ~10% extinction risk:
1) Techno-determinism: Someone will build ASI no matter what, and I can do it better & more safely than China/ OpenAl/etc
2) Consequentialism: ASI might kill us, but it also might produce utopia/ immortality/superabundance, so it's a +EV bet
3) Self-interest: I am personally having fun & getting rich working on cool tech with friends. I don't think about the macro stuff.
