Re-reading a lot of political biographies this week -- Mitch Hepburn, John Robarts, Robert Stanfield. It made me recall (with fondness) the old Morningside panel with Eric Kierans, Stephen Lewis, and Dalton Camp. All men (would not fly today) but I learned so much from their weekly discussions.

Old white dude here. I wrote critically and spoke at Board of Governors about a rape chant in 2013. Years later, as Associate Dean, I found ways for students who were sexually assaulted to continue their education without interacting with the people responsible. But still this beat goes on.

Historian Margaret MacMillan has a guest editorial in today’s NYTimes, part of the New World Disorder series they are running. Well worth a read. Pic has nothing to do with story … I took it a couple of weeks ago. In case you need a pick-me-up.

Sending books to a few helpful colleagues. Also, I am very happy with the blurbs on the back cover, from some of Canada's leading historians -- I had not seen those before the book came up and they are incredibly meaningful to me, given the people who provided those very kind words

Won't get Dolly-level attention (and I adored Dolly Parton) but sad to see that Tim Curry passed, at age 80. For lots of kids who were weird, different, unsure, he was an icon.

Super deep into a research trip on occupational health and safety. Ran across this tidbit and it seemed particularly apt for my summer of research in US archives.

Reading stuff on occupational health and safety, and the role of industry-sponsored university research. This cartoon, from 1976, with the infamous German phrase that "Work sets you free", captures a critical perspective on these relationships. Something to think about 50 yrs later.

Between trips, I made a brief stop back in Halifax. I went to a CUPE picket line to support workers who have been on strike since mid-April. Some of the longest strikes in recent Canadian history have been in long-term care and these workers deserve better.

Here’s your sport thought for today: the media will whip up the Stanley Cup drought today and how a Canadian team hasn’t won since 1993 (33 yrs). But they won’t tell you that it has only been 31 years since an American team won the Grey Cup.

Nobody should die on the job. The latest data indicate that more than 1000 workers died on the job last year. Today, on this National Day of Mourning, take a moment to reflect on why workers die ... and why that number has not gone down this decade. Too many lives, too much loss.

2,200 nursing home workers at 22 sites in NS are on strike. Some of the longest strikes in Canadian history have been in LTC -- and that means that low-paid workers have struggled mightily for fair wages and better living conditions and care for residents. I stand with CUPE-NS.

This is just wild. Naomi Wolf does not realize that the "dark side of the moon" is only dark from Earth. And she implies that English majors don't know anything about science (this is not my experience) ... or perhaps that they have never noticed the sun.

TIL that Markwayne Mullin, the junior senator from OK and member of the Armed Services Committee, thinks that Ayatollah Khomeini -- who lead the Islamic Revolution in 1978 and 1979 but who died in 1989 -- is still in power. There is no end to the incompetence.

I am currently doing research on occupational health and safety in the 1970s and 1980s, and I ran across this cartoon pertaining to office automation. Struck me as very 2026!
A cartoon showing two researchers in lab coats holding up a microchip. The caption reads "We've decided to call it the neutron chip. It eliminates jobs, but leaves the work-place intact!"
