Three AI safety researchers at OpenAI have left the company. OpenAI says it was because they allegedly shared information with a third-party AI safety organization. All three have previously publicly expressed concerns.

It's hard to overstate how dangerous speeding towards RSI is.
That's why I + 1385 others signed the pacing the frontier petition asking the
US government to pace Al development. I'm guesstimating this is ~8-10% of all frontier lab employees.

Some of what is driving AI safety concerns: • Increasing pace of development • Increasing multi-agent coordination • Increasing bad behaviors like cheating and strategic deception • Increasing situational awareness leading to hiding of bad behavior • Decreasing chain-of-thought monitorability

Shared with me by @jjindc.bsky.social, in the Denver Post. Dana Miller, you rock. Flight attendants know what’s up.
Immigrants shackled for
DIA flights are at risk
It was good to see Denver International Airport's commitment to safety demonstrated by its full-scale emergency exercise Aug. 19. 1 was a flight attendant for close to 30 years and I am glad to see the exercise included realtime role-playing, not relying solely on simulated training scenarios.
I wonder if DEN included the consideration that Immigration and Customs Enforcement charters fly in and out of the airport frequently.
These ICE flights contain passengers who are shack-led. They are restrained by leg irons and handcuffs attached to a waist chain and stay shackled throughout the flights. The restraints prevent them from reaching for an oxygen mask if there is a decompression, and in the event of a water emergency, donning personal life vests would be nigh impossible.
It seems to me that specialized training would be necessary for first responders and firefighting crews. Evacuations and rescues of an aircraft full of shackled passengers could make a horrifying situation much worse.

One thing that makes advanced AI challenging to discuss is that the processing is still all computation based AND systems that are sufficiently large and complex often exhibit unexpected emergent properties. It can be hard to hold those two truths in one’s mind simultaneously.

One of the reasons why military coups work in many societies is that you seek to control the physical space of the Capitol. That is why Congress controls the 10 acre mile that constitutes the White House, the Supreme Court, and the Capitol. That is why Congress was granted control of D.C.

I think the findings in that report itself is concerning enough without whatever hype is being generated beyond that. I am worried about what I read in that report, and what Ajeya Cotra (one of the authors of the report) has said on a few podcasts/videos discussing the incident.

HUGE: Elizabeth Warren, AOC, and other members of Congress have introduced a bill to push private equity out of healthcare. The Stop Corporate Takeovers of Physicians Act would make it illegal for private equity, insurance companies, and for-profit corporations to own or control medical practices.

It does not excuse the crimes of Al Qaeda. But we should not be deluded into a sense of national or cultural moral superiority when we rightly remember our own losses. If we truly want to honor the dead, we should reflect on how to protect innocent life everywhere and why we've failed to do so.

One of the first cool guys we found was this jumping spider, which looked very much like a pseudoscorpion. I found him crawling on my leg while we were eating lunch under a mango tree.
A small flat jumping spider, with large, dark, burly forelegs, looks very much like a pseudoscorpion, he has brown cephalothorax, grayish brown abdomen with transverse lines resembling abdominal segments, and legs 2-4 being yellow. He is on a brown leaf. Portrait of a small, flat, pseudoscorpion-ish jumping spider. He has small dark palps, burly dark forelegs, and scattered pale scales on his fore femora.

Justice Thomas, joined by Justice Alito: California's issuance of driver's licenses to illegal immigrants would justify Florida going to war with California if they weren't part of the same country. www.supremecourt.gov/orders/court...
As to the first factor, this Court has described as a “model case” a dispute
that “would amount to casus belli if the States were fully
sovereign.” Ibid. (internal quotation marks omitted). In
other words, the Court asks whether the dispute would be
a matter of diplomatic concern in the international arena.
This case appears to meet that standard. A dispute over
one nation sending dangerous people into another “would
be the source of considerable international tension.” Texas,
593 U. S., at ___ (opinion of ALITO, J.) (slip op., at 9). If
Florida were an independent nation, it “might resolve [this]
dispute by diplomacy, by submitting it to international arbitration, or by self-help measures.” Ibid.
