Night. The House of Chimes - a tower which you might immediately think of as Big Ben - is adrift in the River Thames. It still seems to be keeping time. In the background, a large, alien building looms over the city of London.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

One of the many things that makes Heated Rivalry so good - shot in about 40 days on a comparatively low budget, they had to find innovative solutions that added to the closeness and intimacy of the show, and lean on the unreal chemistry of the two stars. Another series coming exactly one year later.

Very beautiful piece of writing. Echoes my own experience in many ways - I lived with 'the shadow' looming over me for so long. Never coming extremely close, but always there, and it warped my life in so many ways. Extremely grateful to have (mostly) managed to leave the shadow behind, for now.

Interesting spread from UC Berkeley newspaper about AI use across the university. A lot about the university using AI in official comms and obituaries (!) but as writing teacher, this caught my eye. I worry about this because of course "organizing thoughts" is of course "thinking" /1
“Everyone uses it, that’s my experience,” said one campus freshman, Ben Schiro.

Still, Schiro and other students expressed discomfort with the authenticity of these public-facing messages, which AI may have played a role in the creation of.

Those students said they may use AI for editing or research or organizing thoughts, but they draw the line at generating words.

I've thought about The Doldrums recently, I've been in them for a little while now (in terms of publishing success, not in terms of creative output). I've had some projects fizzle out, a relationship with a publisher that died slowly as they lost interest, a book I was really proud of didn't sell...

The Knight's Tour is the route a chess knight would have to take to visit each square of the board exactly once. A knight moves 2 squares on 1 axis & 1 in the other. It has inspired experimental literary forms, like Sanskrit poems that can be read left to right or by jumping syllables like a knight.

Writing a novel is like doing a giant jigsaw puzzle where you have to create all the pieces yourself and many of them are misshapen and don't fit, but when you FINALLY put all of the pieces together you have an immense sense that the puzzle is shit.

This is very good, and this new model of publicity feels off for writers. Writers tend to be weird little gremlins who go into a hole for a couple of years and emerge with a book. This personality type doesn't necessarily cross over to the kind of person that does a Tik Tok every day.
