Silver Birch magic. The visual and textural contrasts in its bark: mithraic light and dark, smooth and rough. Is there a word for the pleasure of looking at birch bark? Betulismus? Björkenscrute? Beithenfreud? It should be a word which enacts contrasts, leaps the stave, sings the rum wonder.

I enjoy the process of thinking through intriguing specimens. Barite lends notable weightiness to a specimen. Hardness is 3/3.5 and thus similar to calcite, but does not fizz with acid.

Pitted #fossil bone frags are common on #Suffolk UK beaches with #Pliocene Red Crag debris. Phosphorite nodules from the basal Crag are similarly pitted. Hypothesis: bioerosion by #siboglinid worms munching phosphate-rich substrates. Any thoughts? @thepalass.bsky.social @coastalpaleo.bsky.social

The caput femoris ball of a fossil mammoth femur picked from the Waveney valley gravels today. Almost certainly Mammuthus meridionalis originating in the Crag, a near-shore marine deposit of Plio-Pleistocene age. Picture a dead animal floating out to sea. Hard bits remain, rolled around by tides.
