Flexibility must be the norm, not a privilege. That means stronger rights, better support for employers and proper enforcement for everyone. Read our full response:

Flexible working - the right direction, but our workforce needs more - Timewise
With the first phase of the Government's flexible working consultation closed, we set out why the proposed reforms don't go far enough.

And it's not just workers who need more support. Many businesses, particularly smaller ones, don't have the tools or guidance to build flexibility into day-to-day operations. Getting this right takes investment.

Timewise @timewise.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
The right to flexible working is still just that: a right to request. And without a right of appeal, enforcement depends on workers having the time, knowledge and confidence to push back. That's a big ask.

Timewise @timewise.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Real positives: employers must now engage before rejecting requests, there's a reasonableness test and consultation rights are stronger. For workers who've faced unexplained refusals, this matters.

Today's flexible working announcement - www.gov.uk/government/consultations… - is a step forward, and we need to go further. Here's our take on what it gets right, and what still needs to change. 🧵

Young workers need better jobs - new Timewise analysis finds poor job quality is “key driver” of young people leaving work due to ill health
