It’s been two years since Ontario Place West Island was destroyed for a planned private spa. Hundreds of trees were cut down - here’s a snapshot of the many species who lost habitat. 🧵
Side-by-side comparison of a landscape on the Toronto waterfront. In one scene, an island is covered in trees reflected in a still channel of water. The other image of the same place shows a barren stretch land with a pile of rubble in the centre.

I welcome Europeans to visit Canada but if you’re considering winter, you should know what you’re getting into! Vancouver is Amsterdam, Toronto is Oslo, Quebec City is colder and snowier than Moscow.

Yikes. Wilderness trip planning with AI is putting up “lemons” before you’ve even started. Ever grateful to James Raffan for the “lemon theory” (good explanation here: paddlingmag.com/stories/risk... )

I've seen everyone sharing that US Dialect Quiz so I decided to make my own, much crappier, CANADIAN DIALECT QUIZ to guess where in Canada you're from
A flow chart I have created with multiple questions and the answers determine where you're from.

Question 1 is do you call it a hydro bill (which then branches down to ON, QC, BC, MB) or an electric bill (which then branches down to SK, AB, NS, NB, PEI, NL)

Question 2 is do you call it a cabin (BC, MB, AB, SK) cottage (ON and atlantic) camp (northern Ontario) chalet (QC) or bungalow (Cape Breton)

To delineate BC from MB: do you call it dinner or supper

To delineate southern Ontario rural or big city: have you heard of a stag & doe

To delineate SK from AB: do you call a hoodie a bunnyhug

And finally to delineate NL from the other atlantic provinces: whaddayat? (Correct answer: dis is it b'y)

Kawhi Leonard Buzzer Beater Game 7
Alt: Kawhi Leonard Buzzer Beater Game 7 of the 2019 NBA East Semifinals. The ball bounces up off the rim four times, long enough for Kawhi and others to squat down and watch it before finally dropping through the basket. It’s a gif so you can’t hear the crowd pop but it was spectacular.

I want to go back in time to, say, 2012, to tell people that Blue Rodeo's Hasn't Hit Me Yet would become a nationalist anthem after President Donald Trump renamed Lake Ontario.

I started my seventh and eighth @thebookerprizes.com longlisters yesterday and am enjoying them both! M. John Harrison’s The End of Everything has pulled me into its weird dystopian world and the audio of Luke Kennard’s Black Bag had me stifling laughs while out shopping. #booksky
A copy of the book The End of Everything sits on a grey couch and a white hand holds a purple and white striped mug. The cover of the book is in the process of closing so it’s a little blurred as is the image of a beach on the cover of the book. An image of the audiobook interface of the book Black Bag is superimposed on a photo of black-eyed Susans alongside a sidewalk.

Fletcher’s withdrawal really shook things up. Toronto-Danforth was looking like a sleepy race. Now it has more candidates (18!) running than any other ward. Reinforce your doors, Tor-Dan residents. They’re going to get knocked a lot.
A line chart showing cumulative registered candidates in Ward 14 (Toronto-Danforth) for the councillor race from May 2026 to August 2026, with a notable surge to 18 candidates following Fletcher's withdrawal on August 19, 2026.

I’ve reached the part where knitting becomes obsessive (after the joining). The pattern is the Gin and Tonic sweater (yummm, G&Ts) by @theacolman.bsky.social #knitsky
A partly knitted white sweater still on the needles sits on a dark wood table next to a wicker basket and a ball of yarn. The body and sleeves have been finished so there’s just the yoke and neck left to go. The sweater has a texture and cabling up the sides.

This is a great thread. I retired from TDSB in 2018 and when I was there, we weren’t allowed to purchase from Staples bc the board had other purchasing partnerships. Staples must be thrilled at this workaround.

I rarely align with where my age group ends up polling but am happy to see at least in this regard, we are almost all on the same page. Maybe growing up with the existence of the Soviet bloc and parents who lived through WW2 left a lasting impression.

At age 5, we started reading The Hobbit to our son (he wanted to watch the LOTR films) thinking he’d get bored and give up (we guessed it would be at Tom Bombadil) but he didn’t and four books and a year and a half later, we’d finished them all. Top tier bedtime reading experience. #booksky

This is where I'm about to be a killjoy: The appropriate behaviour is to put your fucking phone down and haze that bear. I'm talking banging pots, calling it a bad bear (seriously, it works, I don't know why), and letting it know it is not welcomed. b/c this below is how you make a dead bear.

With a little under three weeks to go until the reveal of @thebookerprizes.com longlist, I continued the long-standing tradition of making a sure-to-be mostly wrong prediction. I wrote more about it over on IG: www.instagram.com/p/DafneMIlYx... Will you be following the Booker? #booksky
A collage of the covers of 13 books that I am predicting will make the Booker longlist. The books are:

Top row:

Son of Nobody by Yann Martel
Life of M by Rachel Cusk
Uprising by Tahmima Anam
John of John by Douglas Stuart
RABBITBOX by Wayne Holloway-Smith
A Private Man by Stephanie Sy-Quia

Bottom row:

This is Where the Serpent Lives by Daniyal Mueenuddin
Beginning Middle End by Valeria Luiselli
The Disappearers by Marlon James
Gloria Don’t Speak by Lucy Apps
Transcription by Ben Lerner
Code Noir by Canisia Lubrin
Land by Maggie O’Farrell

Lists were one of my favourite things about the old place and I use them here too. I’m genuinely peeved at any social media platform that doesn’t include that feature. My brain likes to dive deep and it’s especially useful for any “breaking” kind of thing (news, weather, sports).

I finally got around to writing up my thoughts on Maria Stepanova’s The Disappearing Act (tr. Sasha Dugdale) over on IG. Gorgeous writing/translation, a really interesting take on escaping life and “running away to the circus”. @bookhugpress.bsky.social #booksky www.instagram.com/p/DYzdPvkOs7...
A white hand holds a book in front of a lake. The book is The Disappearing Act by Maria Stepanova (translated by Sasha Dugdale). The book is beige with an illustration of a circus “big top” tent and what looks like a train track leading up to its entrance. All the text is in handwriting.
