I don’t usually use Apple Maps so I don’t know if it’s always been like this but I’m curious about how the name is distinctly on the Canadian side (as compared to Google who have it in the middle)
A screenshot of a map of Lake Ontario from the Apple Maps app. The lake name appears entirely in the Canadian section of the lake. The American section has no label.

I started my seventh and eighth @thebookerprizes.com longlisters yesterday and am enjoying them both! M. John Harrison’s The End of Everything has pulled me into its weird dystopian world and the audio of Luke Kennard’s Black Bag had me stifling laughs while out shopping. #booksky
A copy of the book The End of Everything sits on a grey couch and a white hand holds a purple and white striped mug. The cover of the book is in the process of closing so it’s a little blurred as is the image of a beach on the cover of the book. An image of the audiobook interface of the book Black Bag is superimposed on a photo of black-eyed Susans alongside a sidewalk.

I’ve reached the part where knitting becomes obsessive (after the joining). The pattern is the Gin and Tonic sweater (yummm, G&Ts) by @theacolman.bsky.social #knitsky
A partly knitted white sweater still on the needles sits on a dark wood table next to a wicker basket and a ball of yarn. The body and sleeves have been finished so there’s just the yoke and neck left to go. The sweater has a texture and cabling up the sides.

Toronto District School Board below. TL/DR it’s gotta be pretty darn cold.
(b) Cold weather: When temperature and/or windchill factor indicates -28C or lower children will remain indoors due to risk of frostnip and frostbite.
When temperature and/or windchill factor indicates -20 to -28C, recesses may be shortened to 10 minutes and lunch recess be 20 minutes depending on local conditions. Children should be monitored closely for signs of frostnip, frostbite or difficulty breathing.

With a little under three weeks to go until the reveal of @thebookerprizes.com longlist, I continued the long-standing tradition of making a sure-to-be mostly wrong prediction. I wrote more about it over on IG: www.instagram.com/p/DafneMIlYx... Will you be following the Booker? #booksky

A Private Man by Stephanie Sy-Quia

I finally got around to writing up my thoughts on Maria Stepanova’s The Disappearing Act (tr. Sasha Dugdale) over on IG. Gorgeous writing/translation, a really interesting take on escaping life and “running away to the circus”. @bookhugpress.bsky.social #booksky www.instagram.com/p/DYzdPvkOs7...

I can't resist the temptation to knit some summer socks in honour of @tempobasketball.bsky.social Toronto's new WNBA team. Pretty pleased to find these yarn colours. Now to take inspiration from their logos and plan…. #knitsky

If you have the chance to see authors talk about their work, I highly recommend doing it. This week I was fortunate to see Yann Martel at Toronto Public Library and Olga Ravn at Type Books and both were fascinating. #booksky
A fuzzy picture of interviewer Jessica Allen and author Yann Martel seated on a low raised stage with wood paneling behind them. Author Olga Ravn stands in Type Books reading from the English translation of her book The Wax Child. There’s a bookshelf on the left and a red wall and ceiling behind her. She wears a rust coloured jacket, has curly hair, and is holding a microphone.

Seems like a good time to share pics from our visit to Wiarton this past September…
A black poodly-looking dog sits as far away from a giant white sculpture of a cartoon groundhog as his leash will permit. The groundhog has a dapper bow tie. Behind are grass, benches, and water with lots of geese.A large stone sculpture of a groundhog standing up from amongst a pile of rocks sits in front of a bay. Behind is water and the opposite shore with trees and the masts of many sailboats. It’s a sunny blue sky day. The plaque says the sculpture is called “Willie Emerging” (yes, really).Close up of the plaque on the sculpture in the previous photo. It says:

I’m a retired educator, into books and nature, and I’m right between two great toboggan hills.
The Riverdale West toboggan hill on March 4, 2023. We’d had a heavy snow the day before but it turned sunny and warm, classic spring skiing weather. There’s blue sky, sunshine and lots of people either sledding down or walking up the hill. On the far side of the hill are some trees and a contemporary building which is Bridgepoint Health Centre and then a few other bigger buildings. Closest to the camera a woman is sledding down the hill wearing a sleeveless top so her arms are bare. The Withrow Park toboggan hill today, a snow day after a record-breaking snowstorm. Blue skies, deep snow, and lots of people with colourful jackets and sleds either sliding down or walking back up the hill.

A little before and after of my backyard. Apparently there’s still another 20-30 cm to come and I have no idea where I’m going to put it. #ONstorm #onwx (And yes, I never did get all of my outdoor furniture put away)
Lots of white snow with a couple of bird feeders sticking out of it and a garage in the background. The same backyard after the snow has been shoveled revealing two small sets of stairs. The snow on either side of the path is easily 18 inches deep

A common Canadian meme evoking regular tv spots which used to show dramatizations of important moments in Canadian history. They would begin and end in this photo of a lake at sunset with the words Canadian Heritage Minutes at the top. At the bottom of the main photo a Canadian flag, the words Canadian Heritage/Patrimoine Canadien and the Canadian government logo. In the middle would be where the video for the specific moment would appear. In this case, it shows a red rectangle with the title 60 Minutes and an image of a stop watch.

Visited @walbatrossbookshop.bsky.social in Prince Edward County today and it was a tiny perfect gem of of a bookshop. A wonderfully curated collection of fiction (esp translated, Canadian, indigenous, global) and great nature, travel, and geography non-fiction (and more).
The outside of a building which is dark blue below and light blue above. In front is a fence that has a sign for The Wandering Albatross Books in Bloomfield, Ontario. There is a black and white drawing of an albatross (which looks like a super-sized gull) in the middle. Two bookshelves of brightly coloured books. At the top of the shelves it says “Fiction”. Some of the titles include: We Could Be Rats, What I Know About You, Once a Monster, Sokcho, Punished, The Golden Cockerel.A bookshelf of books about nature and walking. Book titles include A Philosophy of Walking, Gone Bush, The Old Ways, Where the Wild Winds Are, Between Britain. Two books sit on someone’s lap. On top is a green book with images of leaves and the title Six Walks: In the Footsteps of Henry David Thoreau. The author is Ben Ahattuck but his name is partly cut off in the photo. Underneath is a blue book with a photo of a woman on the cover. Parts of her face are obscured with oddly shaped blobs of pink and red. The book is The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa.

A Far Side cartoon shows a man standing on the sidewalk in front of a house looking at a sign on the gate that says “Beware of Doug”. The man is wearing a hat and carrying a briefcase that says “Acme Sales Co”. In the yard in front of the house is a man trying (but failing) to hide behind a tree. He is peeking around the tree which is not as wide as he is. We assume this is the aforementioned “Doug.”

Just finished this slim volume from the International Booker Prizes shortlist and, wow, it’s so good. A powerful, nuanced look at the migrant crisis.
The book Small Boat by Vincent Delecroix sits on a couch with a bookmark, a striped journal, and a pen. There is a dog’s tail in the background. The book cover is an overhead illustration of an small empty rubber dinghy in a wide blue sea. If you zoom in, it becomes evident that the “sea” is actually made up of hundreds of silhouettes of people. The title is in white block text at the bottom of the cover. At the top right corner is the Booker Prize logo.

Is there a #skysky tag?
A post sunset sky of oranges, yellows, and purple is reflected in a flat calm lake. A tree and shrub with no leaves in the foreground.

This discussion caught my eye this morning so I’m listening to the episode now! I host a big book challenge on IG. Here are a bunch of the big books by women authors that I’ve enjoyed (missing: Lydia Sandgren’s Collected Works Eliot’s Middlemarch and Mill on the Floss).
Two stacks of big books sit on a carpeted staircase.

Left stack from top:
Praiseworthy, Alexis Wright
Tenderness, Alison MacLeod
A System So Magnificent it is Blinding, Amanda Svensson
The Books of Jacob, Olga Tokarczuk
The Eighth Life, Nino Haratischvili
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, Susanna Clarke

Right stack from top:
Tomb of Sand, Geetanjali Shree
Wolf Hall, Hilary Mantel
The Luminaries, Eleanor Catton
Barkskins, Annie Proulx
