My toxic trait is that I think 1 is the best prime because it is the most prime.

#ElemMathChat Q8 That’s all for tonight Thank you for joining us! Hope you had fun and long live positive feelings about asking questions!

#ElemMathChat Q7 “Last Tile Standing” is another one of my favorites (for Tile Farm’s version go to tiletalk.tilefarm.com). I’ve chosen one of the 24 patterns above, can you think of yes/no questions that could help eliminate options? Ask and I’ll answer yes/no. Can comment below if easier.
Twenty four clusters of tiles that look like 3D clusters of cubes, each with a differing number of cubes.

A6 How many hexagons did it take to make this whole thing? How many blue hexagons are there for every white hexagon? How many types of “triangular things” are there made out of hexagons? How many white hexagons are in the largest unit that repeats? #ElemMathChat

#ElemMathChat Q6 “How Many?” is another great question asking activity (shout out @triangleman.bsky.social ) (for Tile Farm’s version go to tiletalk.tilefarm.com). What “how many” style questions can you ask about the above pattern? Can you think of one you can’t answer?
A blue and white pattern seemingly made out of hundreds of hexagons colored somewhat randomly but with a certain pattern.

A5 I wonder “what is the ratio of yellow to blue?” I wonder “does this relate to flowers somehow?” I wonder “how many triangles are there?” #ElemMathChat

#ElemMathChat Q5 “Notice And Wonder” is an obviously great question asking activity (shout out @mfannie.bsky.social ). Can you ask some questions about things you wonder about the above pattern? (Made in Tile Farm Studio)

A4: I think a lot of the negativity around question asking comes from large groups. In groups of 2-3, students feel much more comfortable. I think activities that involve question asking as the norm really get kids comfortable asking questions (incoming . . . ). #ElemMathChat

#ElemMathChat Q3 What is the question-asking culture like in your classroom(s)?
011
Alex Romero @tilefarmer.bsky.social · 03/04/2026
A2 I would still be terrified of this also because there was such negative stigma around question asking. But in hindsight as an adult, curiosity-focused questions are a result of deep understandings, and should be something you are really proud of. #ElemMathChat

#ElemMathChat Q2 Think back to your own experience in elementary school, or step into your students’ shoes. How does it feel to ask a question when you are curious about something?

Alex Romero @tilefarmer.bsky.social · 03/04/2026
A1 When I was a student I would never dare ask a question if I didn't know something. I would be terrified that everybody would think I was stupid. Even though in hindsight I bet a lot of my peers had the same questions as me. #ElemMathChat

Pattern block play! #21CenturyPB #iTeachMath
The image shows a circular arrangement of six flower-like shapes with 21st Century Pattern Blocks, leaving an empty, flower-shaped space in the center. Each flower has a central equilateral triangle composed of three teal kites, which is then surrounded by six pink triangles, and six green and six pink triangles.

On further thinking, it is easier to get a large secondary lead at second base also because of the square root of two.

#elemMathChat A3: I feel like one of the most important things in facilitating math play is having relatively simple rules and boundaries. Structured freedom.

#elemMathChat A2 I love an activity we do in Tile Farm Studio called “Number Portraits” where students make a creative representation of a number or expression. I think it’s effective because students love being creative, and they end up doing a ton of calculations on the way.

#elemMathChat A1: I think it is possible to learn an overwhelmingly large number of things through play. Maybe you aren’t always playing but play can be an integral part of every learning process. It can be helpful both early on and late in learning anything.
