Had such a great time at St. Patrick’s in Norfolk! After a year of Math Workshop, teachers reflected, refined, and connected their work to research. Teachers reported more student participation than ever. That’s the impact of strong instruction! Interested in a visit? jennifer.lempp@mathworkshop.net

🎁 Learning doesn't need to be wrapped with a bow. Find out what Ss are still pondering after your lesson with this strategy via educator Laurel Aguilar-Kirchhoff:
Exit ticket shows a smiling emoji, an emoji wearing glasses and a confused emoji, with prompts about what students enjoyed, what they want to know more about and what they are still scratching their heads about.

A lovely variation of a growing patterns activity from @mikewiernicki.bsky.social. What if we give students an image of Stage 1 (instead of 1-3) & ask, "How might it grow?" B/c they create the pattern, students have "a real 'need' to know how to describe it."

Open Patterns
When we teach students about patterns, we’re really teaching them how to begin to think algebraically. This is especially true when we use Growing Patterns or Visual Patterns from Fawn Nguyen…

A9 I am a big fan of having kids write summaries and reflections. We learn when we reflect on what we've done. #elemmathchat

A8 A centers tip: to do a thorough introduction before sending kids to centers otherwide there's too much off-task behavior and kids not doing what you intended. Role play what they should do. #elemmathchat

Sue O'Connell @sueoconnellmath.bsky.social · 30/01/2026
A5 Strike Out is one of my favorite games for rounding. It offers a visual model (number line) to support thinking, and once students have crossed out some of the balls they really have to consider what 3-digit number to create with their rolls. Requires and develops number sense! #elemmathchat

Q6 How might you modify this task for different levels of learners? #elemmathchat
000
Sue O'Connell @sueoconnellmath.bsky.social · 30/01/2026
A4 I see both as valuable in different ways. The grid is about understand the multiplication by drawing models. If they don't know the facts, they can solve them with the models. The bingo game is about fluency through repetition. Both understanding and fluency are important. #elemmathchat

Q5 What is the goal of the worksheet? What is the goal of the game? What features in the game might help develop conceptual understanding or challenge students' thinking? #elemmathchat

Q4 Both of these practice tasks focus on fact fluency. How are they alike and different? #elemmathchat

Sue O'Connell @sueoconnellmath.bsky.social · 30/01/2026
A3 And it's okay for kids to explore for practice. Often they n eed more time to explore, model, talk... It doesn't have to be about an answer. #elemmathchat

A2 I think worksheets like the ones I posted send a message to students that it is all about answers and repetition (memorization of process). Not all worksheets give a negative feeling, but many do! #elemmathchat

Sue O'Connell @sueoconnellmath.bsky.social · 30/01/2026

Hi! I always think about encouraging teachers to use the practice task to apply with a nudge. Like what can the task do to move them forward a little and *use* what they learned rather than practice what they learned?

Reminder via educator Cathy Marks Krpan: ALL Ss are math people! #EduSky
"Some students think they are not math people. They are. We all are. Their abilities are hidden or wrapped up with bad math experiences. Teachers know this and can take time to help carefully unwrap students' math abilities so they can access and recognize their own math potential." —Educator Cathy Marks Krpan
