Merriam Webster out here fighting for its life
Merriam-Webster & @Merriam..•18h
'Goodbye' is an alteration of "God be with you."

Sean Kress• @SKress7514 • 16h
Do you have evidence to back this up? If so can you explain what "good night" , "good
morning" and "good evening" are alterations of?

Merriam-Webster & @Merriam..•15h
whatSean Kress & @SKress7514 • 14h
I was genuinely asking the question because the only thing I find on the internet is that it is basically a slur from the original.... I assumed there was a better explanation for it than that as it seems a little unlikely given the good night, good morning etc haven't been slurred into something else too. Sorry if you saw that as offensive.

Merriam-Webster @ @Merriam...•14h S
It is not related to 'good night/ day/morning.'
The 'good' in those do not come from 'God.'Sean Kress @ @SKress7514 • 14h
So the internet suggestion this it is just a slur is what you are basing that on too then?

Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Merriam-Webster's etymology follows established linguistic scholarship, not unverified internet suggestions of a "slur."
"Goodbye" is an alteration of "God be with you"; "good" in greetings like "good morning" has separate origins unrelated to "God."

Hey Bluesky, could you help spread the word? My goal for the day is one new sale at my shop. Each Jeremy Creature is designed and hand-sewed by me and takes many hours to create. jeremycreature.bigcartel.com
Here's a lovely pic of some of my hand-sewn, fabric art Jeremy Creatures. The ground is green fur and the background is a beautiful galaxy print fabric. One creature is a gray rock with two different sizes black eyes and a little frown. There's a tall ghost with about 35 black eyes of different sizes and a wide mouth full of sharp teeth. There's another spirit with many eyes, twirly head wisps, and an open mouth with sharp teeth. There's also a ghost with a tiny face, with two different sized eyes and a little frown. There's a black ghost with a gray moon face, their body covered with hand-embroidered stars and planets of various sizes and colors. There's a frowny white ghost featuring embroidered red flowers. There's a super tiny frowny white ghost, and a super tiny black ghost with four eyes and embroidered stars.

Billionaires get mad at things that can't be bought, like talent. Surely they should be able to write books and perform music and have mathematical insights just as well as the talented -- they're rich! If we let them dismiss and devalue real talent, we're going to pay a big price.

Instead of licking the hands of AI companies, the SoA should be bringing about an anthropic-style claim for UK authors. All that stolen work and only US are getting settlements? Not on, and sends a terrible message to local writers.

Note, Meta faces publishers' lawsuits alleging it torrented pirated books from shadow libraries to train its AI. Trial date was set just yesterday for May 3, 2027. Meta looks to now be trying to write sweeping website scraping rights into its terms. Quite a coincidence. Or a wake-up call, all. 4/5

I actually think the use of the word “finally” is so telling as to the role our heavily right-wing media plays in our politics. Sources like The Telegraph have been pushing successive governments for trans-exclusionary policy for years. They’ve got what they wanted. This is now their victory lap.

It’s so wild to me that they tested our IQ at 12. I mean, did any generation after ours get tested in schools? And why did they even test us, because I honestly can’t recall anything coming of it. (They didn’t even tell us the scores, but I saw the report on my teacher’s desk.) It was useless.

I think it's clear that the majority of authors would like it if publishers didn't use platforms built on work stolen from their own authors. So why isn't that the ask? If that's not tye position, then the charter gives publishers meaningless salad that they can use to justify pushing LLMs.
