Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

I have a lot of feelings about how social media has kind of ... ruined the experience of being an artist who is sharing their work online.

Back when DeviantArt was new, before even the llamas, there was this unspoken phenomenon. Posting art was an immediate thing, but the engagement and interactions … they came much more slowly than now. People live in a world now where the second you hit “post,” there is an opportunity for a like within 5 minutes. I have seen people delete posts with comments ON THEM just because the person felt like it “bombed” and could do better at a different time of day because it didn’t exceed a certain number within a certain time. When did we get so greedy? When did the single like or comment stop being ENOUGH? Why do we rely so much on the feedback of others to decide if we are enjoying what we make or not?

The art part used to come first. It used to be about what people were passionate about making, not what pleases the mob. I’m done with the mob. It is impossible to please the fucking mob … but letting the art come first? That’s something I feel like I can at least gradually change in myself. Step by step. I want to learn patience, and I want to spend more time getting to know the people who are interested in me and my work. I don’t need to scream in a room full of people and then try to placate the first few people who look my way. If people want to engage with me, they need to step out of the mob and treat me like a person. That’s all I want, anymore. Connection. Genuine and honest connections that take time and take patience.

Anyhoo, all this long ass paragraphs to say... it's not that digital is outselling physical fully. It's just that the ecosystem has been built to get the most revenue possible at every turn and that is in digital. But if we see the console sales, 82% of consoles that Sony sales have a disk drives.

And I am not even touching the "you have to copy the game to the system in the disk, if I preorder digital it can predownload" can of worms of the Playstation and XBox ecosystem. At least Nintendo usually has all in the cartridge.

Years later, all big gaming stores in my area died, smaller ones had to sell at higher prices to survive and Amazon finally delivered in my area so I got the game at a discount. But I had already gotten a digital copy. At full price.

Back when Neo The World Ends With You came out, I made a preorder on the only gaming store in my area. Come release day, store canceled the preorder cuz "my area wasnt a key market", the game sild out fast on more urban areas and Amazon wouldn't deliver were I lived. I had to buy digital to play.

Besides all of this, many companies (not just Sony) keep trying to make physical media inconvenient or hard to access to push more towards digital. And sometimes they aren't even doing the evil mustache twirl thing. Big releases are easy to take to market and produce enmasse, but other media?

Hell, I have Kingdom Hearts on physical and digital for PS4. And I was dumb enough to think "Maybe I'll get the PS5 versions on sale on both formats if I have spare cash" before this debacle. Besides getting the NS2 digital and game key card when I can BUY the console.

If we check the Sony's other graphs, games like Ghost of Tsushima had over 30% of their sales on physical. Enthusiasts buy physical. And even then, many of them enthusiasts tend to double dip.

And remembering battle passes and subscriptions, well, F2P games (Sony's faved failed obsession)... all is digital, each purchase is another added number and extra cash flow, you don't anything on the accounts except your memories and maybe a lovely coaster if you bought a CD key... it's a lot of $.
