Thing about working with famous epics is that they're famous epics for a reason. Tons of people have had opinions about them for millennia. If you're going to work with one, you know your version is going to piss some people off. Even a *sedate* famous epic inflames some of its audience.

We'll keep on pointing at this comic by @skutchdraws.bsky.social and @hbomberguy.bsky.social until it's embarrassing for tech bros to call you a luddite for hating AI! More of Failure to Launch in the link bsky.app/profile/iron...
"Curse you spinning jenny, you ruined everything!" A simpleton looking peasant yells as they smash the wooden machine.

The standard narrative goes that LUDDITES were foolish lunatics who, in fear of technology, decided progress was bad, and started hitting it with sticks. (But the truth is entire ways of life were being destroyed.)

Previously, skilled craftsmen were respected for the time and effort it took to do their work. The entire family usit would form a cottage industry - creating something valuable, and command a decent living. But when a machine can work 10 times faster its owner can charge less for the prodcts- craftsmen couldn't compete and were left out of work almost overnight.

And as factories became a fixture of the british landscape, these now unemployed labourers often ended up working the factories that had just destroyed their way of life. Britain was the most prosperous nation in history, factory owners became extremely wealthy and influential. But the people doing the actual work saw almost none of it.

Please, I am begging you, bring color into the fashion of your world. Yes, vivid dyes existed well before aniline, they were just less colorfast. This redingote is Italian in make, quilted in the 1720/40s (prob. originally a coverlet!), but assembled in the 1780s. LOOK AT THAT DETAIL.
A woman's gown of yellow silk satin, quilted and corded in a design of interlaced ribbons, with flowers, leaves and scrolls. The gown is in the English (tight-back) style, open at the front. It has long, wrist-length sleeves, curved and cut in two pieces, with buttoned, turned-back cuffs. The gown is unlined. The bodice meets at the centre front, with lacing bands of coarse linen and 8 worked eyelets on either side. There is a round flat collar at the neckline, lined with coarse linen, and two shaped laps (tabs) at the lower edge of each bodice front. The pleats are stitched at the back. The skirts are made in 3 pieces and flat-pleated into the waist seam, which runs from the front opening to either side of the centre back pleats. The lower edge of the bodice, the sleeve cuffs and collar are edged with green silk ribbon.

The gown was probably made from a coverlet, with the front edges of the skirt and bodice fronts preserving the border decoration. The sleeves and collar are heavily pieced.

A Conservation lining of white crepeline has been added to protect the worn underside of the quilting.Saffron yellow quilting up close. From the V&A: Quilting was a popular form of needlework in the 18th century. Both decorative and practical, it was used on clothing and furnishings such as bedcovers and hangings. Quilted furnishings were often remade into clothing, as in this particular gown. The pattern of the quilting indicates that it was done in the mid-18th century. The style of gown dates from the 1780s, which shows that it was refashioned into clothing some thirty years later. This would have added a warm, attractive winter gown to a woman’s wardrobe, without buying a new one.
