Herb Pennock (241-162, 3.60 ERA, 1,227 strikeouts), of the Athletics, Red Sox, and Yankees, one of the greatest southpaws ever, died of a brain hemorrhage on January 30, 1948. He was just 53. Later that year, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Ichiro Suzuki had 126 hits in a 63-game span of 2004. Yes, that's an average of 2 hits per game for over 2 months. No one else has ever done that in baseball history.

From @theathletic.com: When Ichiro Suzuki is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday, it will culminate one of the most trailblazing and fascinating careers in Major League Baseball. Here are our four favorite lessons from his career. trib.al/az0DrfZ
Ichiro Suzuki, former Seattle Mariners right fielder, in a white baseball uniform on a field, adjusts his cap. A quote reads: "He was one of the most eccentric players in the history of the game — talented, mesmerizing, focused and disciplined. There was only one Ichiro." The attribution reads: "Rustin Dodd, a senior writer for Peak"

Yesterday, I discussed the changing dynamics within the Philadelphia club. Cherokee Fisher was released, and Joe Borden was brought in to replace him at pitcher. But July 25 is a Sunday in 1875, so no baseball. Let's talk about what's going on around the league and why it matters. 1/
From Threads of Our Game: https://www.threadsofourgame.com/1875-boston/

"Dated July 8, 1875, Boston v. Athletic, Philadelphia, at Boston. Year of photo based on the appearance of player Craver, his only year with Athletic. Date of July 8 from researcher Bob Tiemann, who stated that a “Boston Globe article the next day [July 9, 1875] said, ‘after an enterprising photographer has gratified his ambition for pictures of the two teams, the game was called with the Bostons at bat.’” Tiemann added that “since Harry Wright donned a uniform for the photo, he played right field in the game, his only championship game appearance of the season.” The Boston players wore a white uniform in this photo, with a white cap, dark belts and dark stockings. The city name was arched across the front of a scalloped bib. The traditional accent color for the team was red.

Top row, from left: G Hall (Bos 74, Ath 75, 76), G Bechtel (Ath 70, 71, 75), B Craver (Ath 75), C Anson (Ath 72-75), E Sutton (Ath 73-76), J Clapp (Ath 73-75), D White (Bos 73-75), A Spalding (Bos 71-75), G Wright (Bos 71-75, Bos NL 76-78, 80, 81), C McVey (Bos 71, 72, 74, 75) and H Wright (Bos 71-75, Bos NL 76-81). Front: W Fisler (Ath 66-76), D Force (Ath 75,76), D Eggler (Ath 75, 76), D McBride (Ath 63-75), A Leonard (Bos 72-75, Bos NL 76-78), J O’Rourke (Bos 73-75, Bos NL 76-78, 80), R Barnes (Bos 71-75) and H Schafer (Bos 71-75, Bos NL 76-78)."

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Dave Henderson who would have been 67 today. He played 2 partial seasons with the Sox in 1986 and 87, hitting .226 with 9 HR’s. He achieved Legendary status in Boston in game 5 of the ALCS, when his 2 out 2 strike 2 run HR in the top of the 9th saved the Sox season.

My favorite #WW1 and #July4 stories combined. Read the alt text for more about the cover photo and this historic game. Book: Nine Innings for the King (McFarland & Co., 2015)
King George V meets Yeoman 1/C Michael McNally with Admiral William Sims, USN, looking on, Stamford Bridge, London, July 4, 1918. "Minooka Mike" (Boston Red Sox) led the US Navy baseball team to a 2-1 win over the US Army nine. Future Hall of Famer Seaman Herb Pennock (Red Sox) bested Captain Edward "Doc" Lafitte (ex-Detroit Tigers, Brooklyn Tip-Tops) in a beautiful pitchers' duel.
