I listened to the @justmckinney.bsky.social episode of @doingbaseball.bsky.social and was surprised to learn Geer lived in Philadelphia in 1882 but didn't hook up with the Phila. League Alliance club that season. (Ad from Nov 1881 Inquirer)

Baseball's 19th century stars were quickly forgotten by the time the HOF was established. In 1911, Baseball Magazine published a piece on a theoretical HOF. "The object of our HOF was merely to choose the greatest players from the history of the game..." Charlie Ferguson was included.

As a kid, my first exposure to the baseball's history was through this book by David Nemec. I was enthralled. Eventually, I joined the Society for American Baseball Research in 2015, a year after graduating from grad school. I thought my research focus would be the dead ball era. I was wrong.

Okay, so I'm 500 cases in on the 892 missing Negro League players from 1920-1948, now designated as major leaguers. Thought I would share success rates and a few fun/interesting cases. So far, I've managed to locate 58 missing players definitively with Gary Ashwill at Seamheads giving confirmation

It was an exciting day turned nightmarish for Ed Sixsmith on September 11, 1884. Sixsmith replaced Mike DePangher behind the plate in the third inning because the latter hurt his hand. Also note, three different Philadelphia papers noted 8 passed balls, not 5 per B-R. @twostrikenoise.bsky.social

This weekend, the Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia participated in the Rocky Point Festival (RI) hosted by the Providence Grays. One player had a cigar bat, and asked that I take a few swings. Hard not to indulge.

Reviewing my transcription and one word seems misplaced: "Irwin struck out and Gilligan ended his career(?) at first on Bastian’s assist." Odd. Gilligan finished the game and his playing career ended in 1888. Per the Popular American Dictionary (1885), career was defined as "a course; race".

A thread from the "Look What I Found While Looking For Something Else" file: I was reading a recall article about Charlie Ferguson (d. 1888) in the Jan. 30, 1908 Sporting News. It mentioned a base running contest between Ferguson and Tom Poorman! That's odd and interesting. Problem is, no date! 1/

Tonight the Phillies will be wearing the 1939 baseball centennial patch on their jersey sleeves. Did you know that it was designed by a woman artist? New Yorker Marjori Bennett created the mark, which was worn across the AL and NL that year. My blog post from 2014: www.toddradom.com/blog/in-1939...

I saw a short video today on the importance of Al Reach and his sporting goods business. It started off good before going off a cliff, stating that his company dated to 1874 and that he bought the Worcester (NL) franchise and moving them to Philadelphia. Let's fix that and do a deep dive.

Bryce Harper's cycle on Saturday June 20 was completed in the 5th inning. That's awfully quick and tied Gregg Jefferies for the quickest cycle in Phillies history. Or did he? Reliable records for this kind of thing only date to 1900 or 1901. 1/
