When you ask people about economic inequality, what crosses their minds? In a new open-access paper in Sociology, I asked 47 participants this question. Almost no one talked about money alone. Instead, they pointed to gender, race, visa status, language, and disability. 🧵👇

This Sunday, Die Linke could become Berlin’s strongest party for the first time. Importantly, its success in urban centers reflects a broader sociostructural transformation: from a party rooted in the support of production workers to one drawing disproportionate support from the new middle class.

With COVID-19 we may be witnessing a generation in the making. It is the most named event among the young, irrespective of status, region or ideology. The young were the ones who bore the containment measures. Older people, who ran by far the highest risk of dying, hardly mention it. 6/6

Political orientation, by contrast, is what structures the imprint of migration-related events. They are named most often by right-leaning respondents. Here it is not cohort or region that is crucial but political standpoint. 5/6

Reunification matters most to older East Germans, while West Germans seldom mention it. Reunification brought real gains but also deep economic scars in the east, while West Germans barely felt an impact in their everyday life. 4/6

But which events do people themselves count as formative for their lives? Our data visualization in Socius answers this. 1/6 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
