I've spent the past few months thinking with so many people's beautiful work, and I'm honored to share it more widely.
A poster with details for an art exhibition called "Cut / Paste". It runs from June 2 - October 31, 2025 in the Geography Department on the fourth floor of Cramer Hall at Portland State University. The opening reception was on Wednesday, June 4 from 4:30 - 6:30 pm. The poster also lists the names of 22 artists, and shows three map collages.

Sometimes our government’s racism looks like incompetence and indifference. Because a federal clerk filed a treaty map under the wrong letter, Yakama Nation lost over 90,000 acres to Washington State. Now, the tribe wants it back. grist.org/indigenous/s...

"to listen for the creek when it is covered by concrete necessitates that we reach beyond thinking of a creek as something which exists in and of itself, in isolation." Appreciate this challenge.

One observation is the starting premise: "At our school, we practice restorative justice". As @nbedera.bsky.social noted, participation in this process must be voluntary. However, what actually feels voluntary to K-8 students in a traditional school environment?

I have been witnessing how restorative justice is being taught and talked about at the K-8 grade level. It's been a messy and difficult process. @nbedera.bsky.social articulates the pitfalls I've observed.

As I say over and over again, dams were designed for the climate of the past. Yet there are over 3,000 new large dams in the works globally. With increasingly severe droughts and floods, we need to pivot completely to other renewable sources of power.

It’s NEPA. He’s talking about a court finding that CEQ’s regs for NEPA were never actually regs but only guidances, non-mandatory. Guess what the entire architecture of mitigation in all federal programs rests on? 1979 CEQ regulations, now possibly just guidance. 1/2

This whole thread is worth reading, this bit in particular. In my limited understanding, Korematsu v. United States and Ex parte Endo didn't really resolve the constitutionality of exclusion/incarceration (this should never have been a question). Ganbatte.

Feels pretty awesome to watch a dam come down and a river come back.
A person wearing a hat, sunglasses, and a yellow shirt smiles at a camera. Behind them, a reservoir is slowly draining and construction vehicles are working.A small river winds through an area that was previously the bottom of a reservoir. There is new plant growth and lots of rock and sediment.

Labor is labor is labor. And all work deserves dignity. This includes the work of the caregiver, the accountant, the cashier, the janitor, and yes, the artist. Art underpins the most valuable industries in our economy. Of COURSE artists deserve fair compensation for their labor.

The best repair manuals, Mattern argues, present repair as social, embodied, intuitive, & accessible. "What if we extend these principles to civic systems and public spaces?...Is repair about reclaiming a past or building a future? Is it about conserving the status quo or inciting systemic change?"
