I was blessed by the incline passing as I rode down the MacArdle this morning from Mt Washington. It's one of my favorite parts of biking around Pittsburgh!

Honestly, I'm still processing this information. It's a full 180 change, and at this point we have a lot more questions than answers. One thing is certain though - this means Belasco and other stops along Broadway won't be ADA compliant for at least 7 or 8 years. Disappointment is an understatement!

“Housing for whom?” assumes a zero sum world in which we have to choose between building new market rate housing and building subsidized housing for poor people. No such tradeoff exists. We can let the market serve people who can afford market rate housing AND subsidize housing for those who can’t.

Even more evidence that building new housing decreases rents: Researchers tracked the residents of a newly built luxury condo building and found that they freed up less expensive apartments nearby. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....
Using detailed address-level microdata, we trace movement chains originating with
the initial residents of The Central and document three main findings. First, we show
the building generated a substantial number of local vacancies. We identify 180 specific
addresses that became vacant because of moves into The Central. Scaling to account
for data coverage suggests the new tower induced more than 500 local vacancies in
the three years after construction, by setting off chains of moves. Second, while The
Central units were expensive on a per-square-foot basis, the homes vacated by movers
were significantly cheaper. Homes left behind by those moving into The Central were
about 40% less expensive. Unlike much of the prior literature, which track the changing
neighborhood characteristics of movers

Think about the implications elsewhere... If ebikes double the acceptable commute range in a "flat country with perfect bike lanes", they are an absolute game changer everywhere else. Combining ebikes with even basic safe infrastructure is the fastest way to shift mode share globally.

Happy Thanksgiving
Bottle of wine meme. Top: Thanks for having us at your lovely home.

Middle: Look I just think we need to add more housing in the places where people want to live, like near jobs, schools, and transit

Bottom: Single family zoning was explicitly invented as a facially race-neutral policy to preserve residential segregation and
"local control" is the "states' rights" of our time.

It's not that people "hate" free fares. It's that people who believe in making transit a more reliable and quick option for more people recognize that in a resource-constrained context, every dollar spent to make fares free is a dollar that's not being used to improve the system

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!
