In my classes when gentrification comes up I typically try to push students towards 'urban displacement' as the term they maybe want to use instead since 'gentrification' has now become the empty signifier meaning "any change I dont like" for most ppl

Some examples of facadism in the downtown west area. Interesting that the big new KING development incorporates some historic buildings. And including a facade currently being held up in construction.

Toronto’s problem is that it’s a big city lead by people who hate big cities, but still insist on living in one for some reason

This very fancy, and I’m sure very expensive contraption located on the corner of Bloor and Oakmount Road across from High Park, was taken on July 7, 2026
Who among you actually believe that since January this year, 162,456 bicycles have travelled along this bike path?
That constitutes an average of over 900 bikes EVERY SINGLE DAY, including bone-chilling temperatures in January and February, snow-covered bike lanes AND rainy days!
How much money did our brilliant city council waste on perpetuating this myth? See less

letting rideshare and taxis run amok for almost a decade on a "transit priority corridor" + a lack of camera enforcement and you have this 😒😒 now that FIFA's over, can we rethink this whole corridor?

I would be incredibly upset if Toronto gave up on its street festivals. They’re really important for the neighbourhoods and the businesses that host them. They’re very popular. You just can’t police your way out of the problem of overcrowding and acts of violence. www.thestar.com/news/gta/tor...

Toronto’s streets are where we celebrate. Must we give that up to feel safe?
The streets are ours. After the shooting at Salsa on St. Clair and a weekend of violence, how do we keep them that way?

we continue to live in a timeline where established public transit academia doesn't understand the differing role of a tram and a metro within a cohesive transit system. trams absolutely don't "deliver 90% of the benefits of metros at 10% of their cost", and definitely not in the anglosphere.
Article text:

Your article (Vienna’s public transport is the envy of the world – so why can’t it ditch cars?, 6 May) is a real challenge for UK politicians and policymakers.

In March, Create Streets, Freewheeling and the Campaign for Better Transport, supported by the RAC Foundation, published the report Towns and Trams, advocating the use of trams to unblock city congestion, as in Vienna. Sadly, the tram scheme for Leeds is on ice until the late 2030s.

Trams give 90% of the benefits of metros at 10% of the cost. For the cost of the Elizabeth line, London could have a world-class tramway over 1,000km long, more than twice the length of the tube network.

Even in London, bus use has been declining by about 1.5% a year, despite efforts to attract more trips. Department for Transport data shows that 25% of tram passengers have left a car at home.

A team in Southwark is trying to promote an initial tram line between London Bridge and Denmark Hill, serving three major hospitals, but there are still legal and institutional hurdles to overcome.

UGHHHH when will city councillors accept some of the blame here. Major streets zoning in Toronto means our commercial corridors are threatened with densification because we can only build there!!! If you let people build in million-dollar neighbourhoods instead we'd reduce development pressure!

Any time anyone cynically says there’ll be no consequences for criminal acts, cheating, lying etc, they’re helping enable that lack of consequences. Please don’t do that. I get that it makes you feel smart & practical but it’s not helping. Always call for consequences, whether they’re likely or not.
