I fear being a good hs teacher all day makes it hard to be a great toddler mom later. All day I’m patient with ridiculousness, get ignored, don’t lose it. Then almost-3yo declines pb for his apple, eats apple/shares it with dog, and starts sobbing when he sees pb and can’t have his apples with it.

The “arts.” Why don’t we keep that part of the title more in high schools? That sentence said what I feel in my heart and hadn’t been able to articulate that clearly. Thank you @naemmanuele.bsky.social

Downside of not having my own room: I erased the board lists. But spent yesterday doing a breakdown of the three big driving questions for AI-related research in Eng 10. Again adapting an idea I saw from @marcusluther.bsky.social and excited with what students were asking! #edusky

Have seen all sections of my classes twice this week. Each class has a word cloud for their individual core values. Love seeing what shows up most each year. Thanks as always to @marcusluther.bsky.social for the idea and thanks @teacher2teacher.bsky.social for highlighting this!
Word clouds created based on student responses to questions about what their core values are.

Good teaching is very scalable but you’re not gonna like the way to do it (hire way more teachers and pay them fairly)

This is my third year using @marcusluther.bsky.social values activity and found a fable for each that we will read to go with them. Then I hang a word cloud for the top value in each section. So grateful for the sharing of thoughtful ideas.

Been getting these in the mail since shortly after my son was born. He loves “Dolly book” day. And for his birthday, she emails a recorded message and happy birthday song. What a treasure we lost.

What I worry about with these "students can't read" narratives is reinforcing the idea that they are somehow permanently deformed and it just is not the case. Students are as curious as ever, plenty eager to learn. I had their orientations towards writing on the right track in a couple weeks.

One of my strongest takeaways from the Bee this week is that it was a showcase for why critical thinking matters more than ever. So much of what the kids do up there isn’t rote memorization—it’s using their insane prep to solve words like puzzles (using etymology, patterns) in real time.

So I had to be out today at the end of my day (childcare issues- please tune back in later for that rant… bc I have one!) but a student emailed to say they had concerns, didn’t wanna come off disrespectful, can we talk after class? I wonder if they suspect how torn I am on this issue too. (2/2)

I just think if you’ve had a child (particularly in “advanced maternal age”) and have then tried to balance motherhood and work, nothing is more radicalizing. At least I’ve found that to be true.

We live in the ‘burbs. In upstate NY. So it’s not freezing today and the sun is out. I also have a toddler who needs afternoon naps and fights them. I’m over fighting for my life and someone on an adjacent road is celebrating spring with music we alllll can appreciate through closed windows. 😭

Something I’ve noticed and that @johannawinant.bsky.social gets absolutely right: teaching students to focus long enough to build (on) an idea is a gift. It’s no longer standard, at least not in K-12. It requires safety and stamina, both of which are in danger in classrooms across the world.

Anyone know how to get Hulu to show the whole South Park episode before rolling over into beavis & butthead? We pay for no commercials which basically never applies. Then watch 15 min of commercials in a show I wanted to see. Then get cut off before the end. Because… timing??? Cmon…. Do better.

When multiple students say stuff like “You aren’t going to tell us how many paragraphs our paper has to have or how many pieces of evidence we have to have per paragraph? But that’s how we were trained!” it really shows how algorithms replaced writing well before chatbots. It’s about pedagogy. 🤷‍♂️

To pick up something a student actually wrote as a teacher, adding notes and feedback to return back to them? Anyone who thinks forfeiting this, even partially, isn't a substantial loss... I don't know what to tell you.

AP article throwing low key shade at @robmcelhenny.bsky.social - I love Ryan Reynolds too, but this third season even felt more Rob focused in parts like that last episode for sure. Unfair to Rob I think. But I’m super into this show and have been a Rob fan for years too, so 🤷‍♀️ up the town!

also: the scary thing about AI right now is not so much that it is capable of replacing the learning that students need and deserve in the classroom but that a decision-maker several rungs up might think it is capable of replacing the learning that students need and deserve either way, though...
