Re-reading the Hallmarks reviews in prep for a lecture. Given how critical redox mechanisms and ROS-generating pathways are to oncogenic transformation and cancer metabolism, I can’t believe redox dysregulation isn’t an official hallmark of cancer. Fellow ROS biologists - time to mount a campaign?

I don’t know who needs to hear this but it’s more important than ever now to remember institutions don’t love you back. Focus on your science, your trainees and collaborators, and your own well-being. Institutions will always find a way to move the goalposts.

The President's Budget request as released yesterday will gut scientific research. Why should you care? 1) Science is fundamentally a jobs program. Many 100,000s are employed to do science and work for you, the US taxpayer.
NSF, NASA and NIH budgets per year, inflation adjusted from 2000-2025 along with the proposed cuts. NSF includes research component only. Massive cuts across all sectors, well below support spanning 25 years.

With all the carnage being indiscriminately wrought on scientists in the US, remember, a war on science is a lost war. Science doesn’t care what you or anybody else thinks. You either embrace science or you chase imaginary demons. It took us centuries to realize this.

These supplements have helped US science and medicine by supporting diverse cross-sections of society. Diversity is not some sinister code word, it reflects a whole made up of differing elements. Eliminating diversity is not a good thing. Ecosystems that select against diversity die out under stress
