Wiped out my 300 day-plus Wordle streak while working on a deadline very early this morning. My sleep-deprived brain missed the (obvious in hindsight) solution in favor of a less common word. D’oh…

Enjoy your visit to the beautiful Coral Gables campus, the heat and humidity aside! As a longtime Bluesky follower and ‘Cane, I’d have been happy to take you for a Cuban coffee - except I work at the downtown campus (and currently wrangling an R01 deadline…).

Re-reading the Hallmarks reviews in prep for a lecture. Given how critical redox mechanisms and ROS-generating pathways are to oncogenic transformation and cancer metabolism, I can’t believe redox dysregulation isn’t an official hallmark of cancer. Fellow ROS biologists - time to mount a campaign?

I don’t know who needs to hear this but it’s more important than ever now to remember institutions don’t love you back. Focus on your science, your trainees and collaborators, and your own well-being. Institutions will always find a way to move the goalposts.

The President's Budget request as released yesterday will gut scientific research. Why should you care? 1) Science is fundamentally a jobs program. Many 100,000s are employed to do science and work for you, the US taxpayer.
NSF, NASA and NIH budgets per year, inflation adjusted from 2000-2025 along with the proposed cuts. NSF includes research component only. Massive cuts across all sectors, well below support spanning 25 years.
