Rented a van to pick up a sofa and immediately became a Van Guy, being waved through by other Van Guys when turning and so on. Highly satisfying.

Shocktober 2026, day 4. Thirteen Ghosts (2001) dir. Steve Beck
Poster for Thirteen Ghosts (2001). A collage of scary ghost images makes up a big screaming face, with the movie name inside the mouth. The tagline is "Misery loves company".

The poster is scarier than the movie.

Pen and watercolor

A pack of witches dance around a fire circle summoning a massive demon in the flames. One of our witches is down though, reader. She lets her sisters know that she won’t be continuing the circle. “Gotta sit this one out, sisters,” she says. “Rolled my ankle.”

I played around with adding a lot of detail to this scene (more shadows, trees in the background, etc.) I think the simpler version works but I’m not sure how I feel about the fire demon drawing. I think I like it. Was having trouble getting the composition of the scene set up with a text bubble in the bottom right. I do like the purple against the black dresses and little boots.

"It's not going away, you should learn to use it or get left behind" fine, I'll be left behind. My skills aside from writing are basically coffee roasting and being a barista, neither of which are at risk of being replaced by AI (automation, sure, but that's something else). I can go back to them.

The issue I have with the whole "you just don't understand how good and useful gen-AI is now" argument is that I don't care. The entire thing is built on widespread, flagrant theft and criminality. Millions of books and artworks explicitly stolen to train AI. Why would I want to benefit from that?

One thing about Starbucks is that I will never run out of things to write about. For example, the latest Pourover bonus article is on the short-lived late-90s cyber cafe spinoff Circadia and the company's odd investments during the dot com boom.

I bought a litter tray from what I thought was an independent company, turned out to be fulfilled by Amazon. For cat trees, the choice seems to be mass produced rubbish from a big box store (still expensive) or something from Etsy that is even more expensive and may also be mass produced rubbish.

Getting ready to adopt two cats has really hammered home just how awful the whole shopping endeavour is. There's so much choice but everything online is a dropshipping scam or from Amazon and you can't trust reviews. Big box stores are full of cheap crap. Everything nice-ish is super expensive.

Starbucks recently settled a lawsuit with Florida over its DEI practices. While it has a long history of projecting itself as a progressive company, this capitulation is just the latest example of the company wearing its liberal bona fides lightly—and discarding them once they become inconvenient.

Starbucks wants you to think of it as a progressive company. But as its recent DEI lawsuit settlement shows, that reputation is has always been superficial.
